This is Dimmu's first official release, and in my opinion, it does justice to the black metal genre. Since it's only a demo, I'm going to look at it that way. In otherwords, I'm going easy on it.

Anyway, it opens up with a dark and ominous instrumental (Inn i Evighetens Mørke part I) that sets a great atmosphere that captures the sun bathed forest you see depicted on the front cover. The EP's overall sound is quite slow paced, but it still has a lot going on in it. When the first song ends, you are knocked back by what comes next. Inn i Evighetens Mørke part II is an agressive song that really packs a punch without being inconsistent to the atmosphere. The vocals here are raw and harsh, just like black metal should be.

The final song, Raabjørn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde, is another slow one, but it has that black metal feeling that I'm familiar with from Dimmu Borgir's earliest releases. All in all, this short release captures the essence of Dimmu Borgir., and where they were headed musically. The atmosphere is strong and the demo is (overall) a slow one, and while I don't physically own this particular release, I still find it very good, and a worthy predecessor of For All Tid.
