Suicide Silence has become one of the most popular and mainstream bands in the deathcore genre. I myself am quite a fan of their music, owning both of their albums. The release of their self-titled EP really got their name out and got them on several tours. Their claim to fame is the album that I am going to talk about today. The Cleansing has introduced so many people to death metal. In an interview, one of the members said that they are “going to stay true to death metal, and not branch out away from [their] core metal sound”. My hopes are that this band stays around for a long time, keeping the spirit of metal alive.

There are a few downsides to their music, which is what I would like to talk about first. Mitch Lucker’s vocals are edited a little, because in the high quality live recordings/videos that I’ve heard, his screams are not quite as good as they are in the studio recordings. I personally like the vocals to be at least 93% pure and unedited. Another downside is that the guitar and bass parts aren’t really as creative as they should. I honestly believe that the guitarists and bassist are capable of creating a much more creative sound than what they did here. I can tell that their parts are very simple, most of the songs consisting of three to five basic notes. My favorite part of this band is their astonishing drummer. He does a lot of blast-beat drumming, which isn’t something I’m particularly a fan of, but he’s really good at it. His riffs and solos are purely amazing, and he is always on time and tight with the rest of the band. But I would like to say again, his parts are lacking a bit in the creativity part. My absolute favorite thing about their music is their extremely brutal breakdowns. A few of the breakdowns on this album are some of the best and most brutal I’ve ever heard. My favorite being on No Pity for a Coward. This album is definitely for fans of the most brutal music out there.

The most well known song from this album is without a doubt Unanswered. This song’s breakdowns and fast parts are extremely tight and unbelievably brutal. The one downside to this song is that it’s composed of only four notes. Bludgeoned to Death is honestly the most brutal song on The Cleansing. There is a breakdown in the middle of the song that is literally “melt your face off brutal”. One of the songs that I’m really not fond of is Hands of a Killer. The song’s intro is just really unappealing to me, and that same riff that’s played at the beginning is played pretty much throughout the whole song. I would say that the breakdown at the end is exceptional. No Pity for a Coward is best known for one thing, and that is the breakdown at the end of the song. They even made some of the lyrics from that breakdown into a shirt design. Eyes Sewn Shut is a song that is one of my favorite deathcore songs, but for some reason they have never played it live (that I know of). Suicide Silence is a political song talking about money (the Suicide Silence) consuming people and basically taking over them and “eating” them alive. Suicide Silence is one of the slower, more brutal songs. It’s also one of the longest (not counting the silence at the end of the track, I personally hate it when bands do that). For some odd reason, most people can’t really get the full message of this song, which is why I just spelled it out for you. My all time favorite song from this album is Girl of Glass. The blast beats are tight and creative, the song consists of more than four notes, and the lyrics really stand out to me.

Suicide Silence is known as one of the best and one of the most influential death metal bands in existence. Although they aren’t one of my favorite bands, I do think they are capable of doing a lot in the metal world. And for all you people that were thinking of commenting me saying that Suicide Silence is a “pussy emo band”, don’t, I personally am not someone that likes to get in the middle of that stuff, I consider Suicide Silence true deathcore, end of story. This album gets 17/20.

I had a conversation with someone at university the other week about hardstyle trance. His opinion of the genre was that it is too abrasive and in your face to feel much respect towards it. This is a guy who has spent the better part of the past twenty years exploring every nook and cranny of the electronic genre, especially goa trance, psytrance and the rather interestingly named psygressive. My friend likes electronic music that can transport him to another world so to speak, something that he can listen to in his own time that doesn't demand your attention. This is probably why he is ambivalent towards hardstyle trance and other styles of a similar niche.

I understand this view. I have the same problem with deathcore. As much as I enjoy bands such as The Contortionist and are able to lose myself in the spacey atmosphere that makes for such good reading music, there are bands such as Suicide Silence who are the hardstyle of the deathcore scene. Unimaginably in your face and obnoxious with as much subtlety as Ramsay Snow, the music that Suicide Silence create serves almost as a parody of the deathcore genre. Over the top vocals, ridiculous lyrics and hard hitting breakdown after breakdown, Suicide Silence exaggerate all of the modern tropes of the genre. Brutality is the main goal that Suicide Silence were aiming for, and whilst brutality for brutalities sake is a perfectly legitimate goal, the band has to have the depth and song writing capability to back it up.

This is a really frustrating album in general. Songs such as Unanswered, The Price of Beauty and Bludgeoned are all banging deathcore anthems. Impossibly thick and massive with some of the most unbearably tough guy breakdowns I've heard, it’s unimaginably stupid and really not self-conscious about it at all, but my god it works. It’s obvious that the breakdowns are the major element of The Cleansing, the interlocking faster sections really aren't that interesting to stand on their own. Riffs are very simple with hardly any variety. Each song follows the same formula with absolutely no diversity poured on top. Whilst the aforementioned songs are seriously rad, the album as a whole is bogged down by too much useless filler that I often wonder why I even bother listening to this album as a whole.

A few killer songs can’t save this album as a whole. It’s like getting ice cream in hell, it just doesn't quite make up for the other stuff. Credit’s where credit’s due however, this is an actually really well put together album. The production is AWESOME. The guitar sound is fantastic, really thick and abrasive. It adds a lot of depth to the music and during some of the better sections makes me forget how stale the rest of the music is. Vocals are also mixed well. Mitch uses the same high scream/low growl combination that has been done to death but he’s fairly competent. They’re heavily edited though and the lows are grating.

I know a great many people who worship the ground this band walks upon but I have to ask myself why? What is it about Suicide Silence that makes them much more worthy of everyone’s attention than the hordes of other deathcore bands doing the EXACT same thing. Maybe it’s Mitch Lucker’s haircut, I don’t know. There’s plenty of other bands doing the same thing and a lot are much more competent at it. Granted you've definitely heard this style done much worse but I still can’t recommend this as it feels mostly redundant.

This album is positively my favorite Deathcore album of all time! When I think of Deathcore this is the first album I think of! Nothing about this album is bad in the slightest. Anybody who listens to deathcore at all must listen to this.

The intro revelations leads up to unanswered perfectly. Unanswered is definitely one of Suicide Silence's biggest hits and still is up to this day. It starts out with a very fast blast beat, most of the song is a long blastbeat with about two breakdowns. The lyrics are talking about how god doesn't exist which is another reason I like it so much. Some of the songs are a little bit similar but there are several stand-out songs like No Pity for a Coward which has one of the best breakdowns I've ever heard. At the end of the song he growls three times "Seconds from the end, whats it gonna be? Pull the trigger bitch." Next he doesn't in a High pitched scream. Another stand out song is Eyes Sewn Shut. The main thing I like about it is the begining. It has a very good riff that fits along perfect with Mitch's very fast screams.

The drumming in this album is a lot of blast beats, fills, and breakdowns. I think Alex Lopez is one of the best deathcore drummers out there today. The guitars are constant chugging and riffing throughout the album and fits the genre perfectly.

Suicide Silence is one of the most mainstream Deathcore bands but that's no reason to dislike the band. Mitch's vocals are still very powerful and it shows the most in The Cleansing. Check this album out, you wont be disappointed. If you like deathcore I am positive you will love this. I rate it 20/20.

Suicide Silence : The Cleansing.

Suicide Silence's The Cleansing Album was released on the 18th of September 2007 by Century Media Records. This album is of the Deathcore genre and is considered to be on the more extreme side of the genre.

The Cleansing contains 100% pure Deathcore. There are no soft tracks in this album at all (excluding the Intro AKA Revelations)and all songs are at the upper end of the brutality scale. This album contains their arguably most heavy song Bludgeoned to Death.

The lyrical themes to this song is mainly about politics, religon and also girls. They use coarse language frequently and the songs have explicit messages from their lyrics.

The Cleansing has a fair few tracks on it but this album has a few minor problems. The first one is that the bass player and the drummer play the same beat in more than one song. For example the songs Unanswered and No Pity For A Coward have practically the same drumming and also The Fallen and The Price Of Beauty have similar bass playing. This gets annoying because sometimes I think that I am listening to the same song and also the same beats get old fast.

Overall The Cleansing is a great album that shows off some of their most brutal songs and is very good considering it is their debut album. The Cleansing is one of Century Media Records most successful debut albums. Even though this album is a bit repetitive It is worth the money for people who are into hardcore Deathcore. Also Bludgeoned to Death Is On this album so it's worth listening to it on full blast.
