Unlike the other three Big Four of Thrash, Slayer have always stayed true to their music; they've stayed thrash since 1983 when 12012 emerged, through the fame of "Reign in Blood", "South of Heaven", and "Seasons in the Abyss", and gone through the treacherous 90s. Still, even with a downfall with albums like "God Hates Us All", Slayer reunited the much favored "Reign in Blood" line-up (Bringing back drummer Dave Lombardo) and released "Christ Illusions", one of the band's best albums in many years.

"World Painted Blood", in many ways, is "Christ Illusions Part 2". The album so far has been hailed as one of the band's best efforts by critics but shot down by long time fans. While the album is no "Seasons in the Abyss", it isn't another "God Hates Us All". If one enjoyed "Christ Illusions", then "World Painted Blood" will be like a welcome home party. If not... Oh well.

"World Painted Blood" is a traditional Slayer album: Fast tempos, dark and chilling songs, and riffs and lyrics that parents would like to shelter their kids from.

As said before, it's not "Seasons in the Abyss", but it doesn't disappoint. It's thrash from the title track to "Not of this God", a solid and satisfying closing. Tom Araya shows his age but he doesn't show signs of stopping himself anytime soon. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman pummel riffs out while Dave Lombardo does what he does best: go insane with a double bass pedal.

The title track serves as a good opener with nice riffs and some excellent lyrics from Araya and Hanneman. King provided excellent riffs and music on this track, as well. "Unit 731" is a Japanese version of "Angel of Death". While "Angel of Death" deals with Dr. Joseph Mengele, "Unit 731" deals with a Japanese unit of the same name during WWII.

"Hate Worldwide" was the second single released from the album. A pretty good track, but a single nevertheless. "Psychopathy Red" has been leaked for some time now and remains a good track to this day. Araya screams his head off at the song's ending and he seems to unleash a lot of anger with this one song. "Playing With Dolls" is twisted in every way. Lyrics and riffs send shivers down your spine while the opening riff has a slight hint of "Jihad" from "Christ Illusions".

Overall, "World Painted Blood" is a good album and features some very good tracks and great riffs from one of the most legendary metal bands ever. While not album of the year worthy, it may get a nomination for a song like "Playing With Dolls" or even the title track. Slayer simply doesn't disappoint.
