Le groupe australien CHALICE , bien que peu connu en dehors de
sa patrie, a déjà sorti deux albums de qualité: Chronicles Of Dysphoria
et An Illusion To The Temporary Real. Le groupe a aussi eu l\'occasion
de supporter OPETH sur leur dates australiennes. Leur troisième album, Augmented,
sera disponible d\'ici peu. Adrian, le batteur de CHALICE, nous présente son
groupe.

Peux-tu donner une brève biographie de CHALICE?

CHALICE a été fondé en 1997 par Shiralee et moi-même; notre but initial était
de créer de la musique sombre et émotionnelle. En 1998 nous avons enregistré
un album démo (Chronicles Of Dysphoria). Ceci nous permit d\'obtenir
un contrat de trois albums avec Modern Invasion Music. Chronicles Of Dysphoria
fut réenregistré avec un budget plus conséquent en 1999. Cet album fut suivi
en 2001 par An Illusion To The Temporary Real qui présente de nombreuses
différences avec Chronicles Of Dysphoria, notamment le remplacement
du violon par la flûte, jouée par Alana. Une tournée nationale et des concerts
avec OPETH et MAYHEM en tête d\'affiche suivirent. L\'année 2003 fut principalement
dédiée à notre prochain CD, Augmented.

Comment décrirais-tu votre musique?

Je trouve qu\'il s\'agit en fait d\'une question difficile; il n\'y a pas d\'influence
évidente ou de groupe que je pourrais citer en disant: \"notre musique y ressemble
beaucoup\". Je pense que nous avons retenu l\'ambiance sombre et émotionnelle
tout en y incorporant des éléments plus progressifs. Je crois qu\'il y a des
similitudes avec un groupe comme MADDER MORTEM, mais qu\'il y a aussi beaucoup
de différences; nous continuons juste à tendre à la création d\'un son original,
et nous espérons réussir à atteindre ce but.

Quelles sont vos principales influences?

Je pense que nous sommes tous influencés par des sources variées. Nous avons
un grand respect pour des artistes comme Loreena McKENNITT, IRON MAIDEN, PINK
FLOYD, DREAM THEATHER, OPETH, et beaucoup d\'autres.

Vos fans attendent impatiemment la sortie de votre troisième album Augmented.
Peux-tu nous en parler?

Augmented a été enregistré à Sydney avec Astennu (ex-DIMMU BORGIR)
aux manettes. Et nous espérons le sortir en octobre. Nous avons le sentiment
qu\'il montre une grande évolution par rapport à notre précédent album. Il y
a à nouveau sept morceaux mais nos compositions sont plus variées cette fois-ci.

Comment et pourquoi avez-vous décidé d\'avoir une flûtiste comme membre
permanent?

Vers fin 1999 notre violoniste quitta le groupe et nous cherchions un remplacement.
Nous avons mis des annonces dans toute la ville et Alana nous a répondu; nous
n\'avions jamais pressenti à quel point la flûte convenait à notre musique, et
elle a depuis grandement contribué à notre son.

Vous avez récemment joué en première partie d\'OPETH pour plusieurs concert
en Australie. Penses-tu que ce type d\'expérience pourrait vous conduire à supporter
des groupes connus en dehors de l\'Australie?

Ce serait génial si une telle opportunité se présentait; cela fait fort longtemps
que nous rêvons de tourner en Europe. Jouer avec des groupes comme OPETH nous
permet d\'acquérir une expérience précieuse, mais aussi un désir incroyable de
concrétiser une tournée à l\'étranger.

Vos deux premiers albums ont reçu de bonnes critiques. Il est un peu
surprenant qu\'aucune firme de disques ne semble intéressée par leur distribution
et leur promotion en dehors de l\'Australie.

Théoriquement Modern Invasion distribue et promeut nos albums mais il s\'agit
d\'un sujet frustrant pour nous. Nous recevons sans cesse des e-mails de gens
qui veulent notre musique mais ne la trouvent nulle part. Notre prochain album
est le dernier pour Modern Invasion, et nous espérons qu\'après cela notre musique
sera dans les faits plus facilement disponible en dehors de notre patrie.

On confond parfois votre groupe avec un groupe allemand du même nom.
Avez-vous déjà pensé à changer le nom du groupe pour éviter cette confusion?

Nous en avons entendu parler; il y a aussi un groupe de reggae appelé CHALICE
qui existe depuis plusieurs décennies. Je ne pense pas que nous changerions
de nom à moins d\'être légalement contraints de le faire, ou que la confusion
ne devienne un sérieux problème. J\'espère que cela n\'arrivera pas.

Quels sont vos projets pour les prochains mois?

Notre principal but pour les mois à venir est de sortir l\'album et de le promouvoir
autant que possible. Il s\'agit d\'un travail considérable en lui-même et nous
attendons avec impatience les réactions.

Augmented est sorti début décembre en Australie. Trois titres de cet album
- Liaising Pandora, Child Of The Matador et Static - sont disponibles sur le

Although they are little known outside their homeland, Australian
band CHALICE have already released two quality albums: Chronicles Of Dysphoria
and An Illusion To The Temporary Real. They also have had the opportunity
to support OPETH on several dates in Australia. Their third album Augmented
will be released soon. Adrian, drummer of CHALICE, introduces his band.

Could you give a biography of CHALICE?

CHALICE was founded back in 1997 by myself and Shiralee, with the initial intention
being to create dark and emotional music. In 1998 we recorded a demo CD (Chronicles
Of Dysphoria) which led to a 3 album deal with Modern Invasion Music. Chronicles
Of Dysphoria was re-recorded with a bigger budget in 1999. It was followed
in 2001 by An Illusion To The Temporary Real which demonstrated considerable
change from Chronicles Of Dysphoria, including the replacement of the
violin with Alana on flute. A national tour and support slots with OPETH and
MAYHEM have followed, and 2003 has seen the band focussed primarily on the forthcoming
release, Augmented.

How would you describe your music?

I actually find

this a difficult question, there isn\'t an obvious influence
or band I can point at and say \"we sound a lot like that\". I think we\'ve retained
the dark emotional feel but expanded with more progressive elements. I guess
there are similarities to a band like MADDER MORTEM but many differences as
well, we just continue to strive to create an original sound, and hopefully
we\'re successful in this pursuit.

Which are your main influences?

I think we\'re all influenced by different sources. There\'s a great deal of respect
for artists such as Loreena McKENNITT, IRON MAIDEN, PINK FLOYD, DREAM THEATHER,
OPETH, and many more.

Your fans are eagerly waiting for your third album Augmented.
Could you talk a bit about your new piece of work?

Augmented has been recorded in Sydney with Astennu (ex-DIMMU BORGIR)
engineering and we\'re hoping for an October release. We feel it shows quite
a lot of development since the last album. Again there are seven tracks but
there\'s more variation in the compositions this time around.

How and why have you decided to have a flutist as permanent member of
CHALICE?

At the end of 1999 our violinist left the band and we were seeking a replacement.
We had ads all over the city and Alana responded - we never could have anticipated
how well the flute suited our sound, and she\'s been an important part of that
sound ever since.

You recently supported OPETH on several dates in Australia. Do you
think this kind of experience could lead you to support well-known bands outside
Australia?

It would be great if that sort of opportunity became available, it\'s been a
dream of ours for a long time now to tour Europe. Playing with bands such as
OPETH gives us valuable experience, but also incredible inspiration to make
such touring a reality for ourselves.

Your first two albums received good reviews. It\'s a bit surprising that
no music companies seem to be interested in distributing and promoting them
outside Australia...

In theory Modern Invasion distribute and promote our releases but this has been
an area of frustration for us. We constantly receive emails from people who
want our music but can\'t find it. This forthcoming release is the last for Modern
Invasion, hopefully after that we\'ll be more readily available outside our homeland.

Your band is sometimes mistaken with a German band also called CHALICE.
Have you ever considered to change your name to avoid this confusion?

Yeah, we\'ve heard of this - there\'s also a reggae band called CHALICE who have
been around for decades. I don\'t think we\'d change our name unless we were legally
forced to, or unless the confusion became a serious issue - hopefully this doesn\'t
happen.

Which are your plans for the next few months?

The main focus for the next few months is getting the album out and promoting
it as much as possible. This in itself is a lot of work and we\'re just really
looking forward to the response.

Augmented was released at the beginning of December in Australia. Three
tracks from this album - Liaising Pandora, Child Of The Matador and Static -
