The New Face of Metalcore
Wolves at the
Gate are a Christian Metalcore band signed to Solid State Records and have released 2 EPs and an album before VxV.
And this is a welcoming sound that I wish more Metalcore bands would implement.
Wolves at the
Gate's
Captors record shook the foundation of what good Metalcore could be and this one is no different except instead of shaking the foundations it shakes the core of it all. It's very safe to say that Wolves at the
Gate can rise above the ranks and take their places with bands like
Demon Hunter,
As I Lay Dying,
Heaven Shall Burn, and
Killswitch Engage. The sound is raw and invigorating and it's really just amazing.
Despite the Christian lyrics, much like
Demon Hunter, anyone can listen to them and still feel a sense of empowerment which is a rarity nowadays from this subgenre. VxV mixes deep screams that remind me of These Are My Sins of I the Breather, however more toned down compared to
Captors or
We Are the Ones, with the clean vocals specialized for bands like Of Mice and Men, before Restoring Force, and it seems they focus more on the cleans then the screams which isn't bad but it can drag the screams down if only slightly. But I can hear a hint of Thrash metal as an influence. It's not prominent but it's definitely noticeable.
The only major problem is the lack of consistency that
Captors had. But it's really not that bad if you decide listen to each track on their own because they do that quite well. The balance of the album fluctuates differently between songs where some just sound like they'd be closer to the beginning of the record like Rest or
Wild Heart.
All in all it's a great record with some minor problems and complaints. But it doesn't stop the enjoyment too much just makes it a small nitpick. The overall finishing score is a 17/20. Fantastic but not a masterpiece. I recommend buying or streaming if you can do either.
