When Epic And Doom Become One

Many bands from the Greek metal scene play some styles in metal which are well-known and predictable, but the epic/doom style is not something usual that we listen to every day. Saint Vitus are the leaders of this style and Wishdoom decided to follow their steps without declaring that they are affected by Wino's band. Their first demo Up the Hammers was a nice and interesting recording and their EP Winds of War the next year was the second sign of what Wishdoom were able to do. Now, their first full-length is here and it is called Helepolis, an album which can make you have the best impressions for this band by the time you are a fan of this style or of heavy sound in general.

It is not easy for a band to create a nice epic album and adding clues of doom metal because there is always the danger to follow the one style and leave out the other. Also an epic concept album must be well written so to keep the interest of the listener whether the album is real or imaginary.

Helepolis could be characterised as a concept album for a battle of the ancient Greeks which shows more the life of that period than the same the battle. An album like this must have riffs of war or of strategy and the songs "The battle of Plataea" and "Helepolis" have exactly the suitable riffs and in the second one there is the participation of Kyriakos Vasdokas from Crosswind on guitars. The songs in this album are not as fast as in other common albums, but they are not slow too. Their rhythm is up and down something that is missing from other albums and make it sounds unique.

How important is an introduction firstly for a song and secondly for the band? I believe that the introduction is able to make you love a song and in here "Up the Hammers" and "Zeus the thunderer" are the best examples especially the second for me is the best song of the album. All the songs are great, they do not have anything bad or a filler. What makes Helepolis better than it seems is the production, in our days many big names fail to have a nice production and not so famous bands like Wishdoom make us pay attention on them by their attempt. So this is one of the reasons to applaud them.

The members are strong enough to do greatest things and if Wishdoom keep up the hard work I think that they will be not only one of the best bands in Greece, but also they will creat a category of epic/doom in their country on their own. The future is theirs and Helepolis is just the begining!
