For something that's supposed to be brutal and heavy this is pathetically weak. deathcore never has been a genre famed for its intelligence, but Annotations of an
Autopsy takes the cake when it comes to band dumb assery.
This whole release is chock full of breakdown riffs, pathetic and meaningless lyrics and just general all around lack of song writing.
Welcome to Sludge City is basically a series of breakdowns split apart with the occasional upbeat section, exciting it aint. It doesn't help by the fact that the breakdowns are as thuggish and moronic as they come, sounding like they were emulated directly from an
Emmure text book. In fact, the whole release sounds like an attempt to imitate said band. Misogynistic lyrics, abundance of breakdowns, no solos, yes we have an English
Emmure on our hands, just what the world needed! Or not, because quite frankly
Emmure suck the big one as it is, and seeing someone else's takes on the style is disheartening to say the least.
Vocally and lyrically this band is atrocious. Half the time the vocalist employs an inhaled squeal, and let me tell you that I cannot stand inhaled vocals. They're cheap, superficial and just generally sound really bad. It wouldn't be too much of a problem if they were scarcely used, unfortunately more than half of the vocal work used is inhales. It's not helped by the ft that the exhale vocals are equally bad, they're pathetically weak and dry, not sounding threatening at all. Lyrically this sounds like it was written in about five minutes by a couple of sex starved blokes. Dealing with themes of misogyny, misogyny and more misogyny, the lyrics here are simply ridiculous. With my personal favorite being "When I'm done with you, you won't have a cunt left!" Oh dear, are people really proud to write this stuff?
So if you want to hear some of the most brain dead deathcore ever recorded then get this as quickly as possible, you're also a retard but you'll be a happy retard.
Welcome to Sludge City has absolutely no redeeming qualities about it and is one of the most unpleasant listening experiences I've had in a while. To make matters worse, I know people who like this.
