Children of Bodom's 2009 LP "Skeletons in the Closet" is much more than just a compilation of their recorded cover song history. It is a fun-filled great time; an extraordinary creative achievement originating from a full slate of songs and artists ranging from the surprising and obscure to the most famous. Each song is authentically metalized with the Children of Bodom signature sound, which in turn makes every track uniquelly their own and not simply covers of someone else's material done in the original manner.

If not for the inescapable fact that "Skeletons in the Closet" is a covers compilation, it would be considered one of the most awesome heavy metal releases this year. On every other level, the overall goal of creating from that which was already created was impressively achieved. The most extreme example of this is the Britney Spears cover "Oops...I Did It Again". They made her metal. They did the same for Pat Benatar, but to a more critical observer, what C.O.B. really did was bring out the metal that was already in her. Other razor sharp renditions from non metal artists include Kenny Rogers, Ramones (punk), Poison (hair/Sunset Strip rock), Billy Idol (whatever), and Fogerty.

At the same time, the songs covered that are already extremely metal is not diminished by the band and that's due to C.O.B. already established as a most competent and accomplished metal band. The Sepultura, Slayer, and Suicidal Tendencies songs are just as aggressive and furious as previously heard.

The fun part of the record is whatever the song is or whoever the artist, all of the songs are played as if they were originally written by Children of Bodom. "Somebody Put Something In My Drink" here is a death metal song, not a Ramones song, and so on. To try to duplicate these tracks would be boring and unimaginative. To highlight again "Oops...I Did It Again", what would be the point of covering Britney Spears if the resulting cut meant that metal fans would still refrain from listening to it? This version unapologetically rocks. All of these songs rock.

To fully appreciate Children of Bodom's "Skeletons in the Closet" one would have to not take the project seriously, understand that these are their versions of many kinds of songs, and focus on the musicianship that makes these works wonderful renditions. With respect to all of metal's original works released this year, "Skeletons in the Closet" was one of the very best albums to come out in 2009.
