Following their first fantastic release
Like an Ever Flowing Stream that achieved the feat of catapulting
Dismember at the same popularity level that felllow-countrymen
Entombed were enjoying, the band of drummer Fred Estby records 4 new tracks, again under the auspices of Thomas Skogsberg. This record is thus intertwined between the two formidable albums of the band and released as an EP named
Pieces (1992).
You just can't ignore the cult cover that shows the decapitated heads of the 5 members already acquainted with the art of provocation.
Dismember already had to deal with some issues with the track
Skin Her Alive in England, most likely because Brits were probably thinking it was directed against their good ole Queen…
Far from having scraped some old forgotten demo tracks, which is often the case in between two full-length releases,
Dismember offer powerful and inspired tracks just like the formidable
Pieces (which you can also find on the classic Masters of Brutalities II compilation) that throws in sharp riffs with this oh so typical Swedish sound. Another thing that compliments this EP is the production the band got from Sunlight Studio. Simply putting it, it’s gigantic. It puts beforehand heavy and nasty rhythmic parts from the Sennebäck / Blomquist pair as well as short and yet biting soli (I
Wish You
Hell). Fred Estby’s snares also snap at you like whiplash.
Everyone had already noticed Matti Kärki’s specific timbre on
Dismember’s debut but with this EP he goes even further delivering vocals of incredible violence, most notably when he switches from his deep guttural voice to screeches that will freeze your blood. It's especially true on the track
Carnal Tomb, it’s a powerful and heavy song where his enormous voice prevails all the way together with excellent rhythmic parts and breaks and always these most inspired short soli.
Soon to be
Dead is the last track but also the most violent one. It’s «
Pure Swedish
Death Metal », violent and basic just the way it’s got to be.
The only downside to this record is that it's only 11 minutes long.
That’s a bit short, even for an EP but still it’s always better to press replay after such great 4 tracks when the disk stops than taking a nap with a 50 minutes long soporific record.
Regain Records had the bright idea to re-release this record with a studio bonus track and 10 tracks from a very good concert of the band in 1993.
If
Like an Ever Flowing Stream and
Indecent and Obscene have put you under the spell and you neglected back then the release of
Pieces, it’s about high time you set things straight in your discography.
