The hot Italian guys deliver a piece of the perfect power-progressive metal! If you think that
Rhapsody of
Fire and
Dark Moor is everything with what Italy is rich, you’re mistaken.
DGM shows that Italy has a lot of hidden forces… I mean a lot of great but not known bands.
DGM was formed in
1994, and in 2004 was released their 5th album, “
Misplaced”. If a couple of the first albums have shown how the band’s style was forming, how the musicians were searching the right path (also with changes in line-up), so the 5th album is already mature, balanced, solid and it’s really made on the high level. You can maybe think – why does she review in 2009 about the album released back in 2004? It’s never too late to write about the good music.
And it’s never too late to discover some old albums.
In 8 songs of “
Misplaced” you’ll hear his majesty mighty power metal with all that fast drumming, speed guitar riffs and keyboard passages, and stuff like that, you know. It starts right from the first song “Living on the Edge” – uptempo cheerful piece of energy (but this album contains also the midtempo “
Through My Tears” and the ballad “Still Believe”). Clean male vocals – not too high-pitched as some power metal bands like, – with interesting vocal lines, catchy melodies, complicated solos, perfectly balanced union of the guitar and the keyboard. This music is not as standard as many power metal acts made by fans of the genre. You won’t find here a lot of stamps (except maybe the songs’ names – difficult to think out something more traditional!) although it’s definitely power-prog with all its characteristic features. This music is interesting, it leads into the fountain of melodies, different breaks and changes make it reminding the mountain road.
Pure progressive music reminds me some terrible forest: you don’t know where to go, what does all this stuff means and after the end you quizzically ask “What it was?” Such music is meant for professionals and for perceptive listeners. For us, usual people, prog-power that delivers
DGM is much better. Italian guys have made that jungle of progressive accessible for all with their amazing mix of styles.
Of course their secret is not only in the mixing styles and balanced of all the details, as I have already written. These musicians know what they are doing and they have really nice melodies along with passion and energy and solid production. So, this album has many chances to stay for a long time in any collection.
