The MTV production of
Korn's "Unplugged" turned out to be quite a successful adaptation of their music into accoutic versions.
This is surprising when you consider how heavy and dense their songs are.
Jonathan Davis proves his creative genius here by not only bringing in some noteworthy guest vocalists, but also revamping the percussion parts on most of the songs including a heart throbbing Tiako drum intro on "Throw Me Away". Speaking of the guest artists, both Amy Lee (
Evanescence) and Robert Smith (The Cure) lend their voices beautifully. "
Freak on a Leash", the song with Amy Lee, seemed to be enhanced by this additional layer of tone and pitch. All of the songs, while it wouldn't be justified to say that any of them are better acoustically, are just the same beautiful and organic in their alternate form. The bass lines keep the two versions consistent, but it's the percussion that makes this albums hot and cool. Jonathan Davis should also be commended for his singing, too, for he did an excellent job changing vocal styles in accordance to the new atmosphere these songs created. Don't get me wrong, there are parts where he still belts out hard notes, but there isn't any wailing. In fact, most of his changes point towards a straightforward approach. The song "Creep" slow in time to begin with, features Davis at his best all the way through. "Creep" may even be the best track on the album if you consider how natural it sounds over acoustic guitar.
All in all, the greatest pleasure generated from this project is hearing a song first, figuring out what it is second, then saying at last, "niiice". If that was the desired reaction, then
Korn pulled "Unplugged" off wonderfully.
