If you like symphonic-metal, listen to Diabulus And Musica...then enjoy
A big thank to Zuberoa, the singeress of that band

interview Diabulus In MusicaBuenos dias Diabulus In Musica, could you introduce yourselves?
Zuberoa: ¡Hola! 

We are a symphonic metal band founded in 2006 by Gorka and me. We released worldwide our first album ‘Secrets’ in 2010 and the last one ‘The Wanderer’ in 2012, by Metal Blade and Napalm Records respectively. We are about to record our 3rd length album now. Gorka and I founded the band in 2006. After winning some contests we decided to record our first album, Secrets, which was released worldwide by Metal Blade Records in 2010. It received many great reviews and we had the chance to play in big festivals. In 2012 we signed a new contract with Napalm Records for the release of our last album, The Wanderer. Now we are working on our 3rd album that is going to be released in 2014.

You released your first full album "Secrets" in year 2010, how is it born?
Z: We wrote a lot of stuff when we started with the band, so one day we thought it was time to record an album. We had to select some songs to be included on it and we chose what we thought that could fit the better ‘Secrets’. We also wanted the album to be varied because we have many influences and wanted to give expression to all of them. We first recorded 4 tracks that we sent to the labels and that is how our first length album born.

"Secrets" sound very good, but two years after will be released "The Wanderer", more powerfull; could you tell us more about it?
Z: We were very happy with ‘Secrets’, but we wanted to go further and experiment with new elements, that’s why we decided to write a concept album, so that we could give expression to different feelings through music. Being a conceptual album, the way we worked was totally different from what we had done before. It was much more challenging and I think we really achieved what we were looking for. We wanted something more like a soundtrack. Music had to fit what we wanted to tell in each song, it had to recreate the atmosphere we had in mind in each ‘scene’.

I think ‘The Wanderer’ is a very passionate album. All the feelings are perfectly captured. I would say that ‘The Wanderer’ is denser, more bombastic… but also more refined than ‘Secrets’. The arrangements play a very important role in all this, so we paid special attention to them adding for example new instruments such as the lute, flutes, percussions, acoustic guita

You are playing a very good true symphonic metal, but 'cos there is a lot of symphonic metal band now, is that not too hard to find an audience now?
Thank you!  Well, nowadays I think there are many bands in all the styles, not only within this genre. What it’s true is that there is not a big audience, symphonic metal will never be mainstream, but this is what makes the audience so special and loyal to their bands. Anyway, I also think that there is a lot of people who doesn’t know this genre exists (or they only know the biggest names) and they love it when they discover it!

Well, imagine....I'm a guy that doesn't kow yet your music; how could you give me the want to listen to your albums?
Z: If you like passionate music you’ll love it ;) Our music it’s very eclectic, but it is based on metal, classical music and a touch of folk and ethereal music, so if you like any of those styles it’s more than likely that you like it. I would say our music it’s something like a soundtrack, many different atmospheres and plenty of different feelings.

One year ago, three members left the band, what about the new members of Diabulus In Musica?
They are awesome musicians and very cool people! We have already played a couple of shows with them and they rock the stage too! They were friends from before so apart from being very professional and motivated people, our relationship is very good too.

Does that new line-up change anything about your kind of music?
No because the new songs were already written when they joined us. There are only two songs where they have contributed in the compositions. Of course it doesn’t mean that they cannot write songs in the future... We are always open to new influences! But we are a symphonic metal band above all and this will never change ;)

By the way, who's writting the lyrics and the music?
All the lyrics are mine and most of the music too. I compose everything when I make a song (the whole band, vocal lines, lyrics and orchestral arrangements and choirs), but when I finish, I prefer each member of the band to check their parts and change what they consider. Each one knows his instrument better than me, so if they consider it’s necessary, they propose changes. The same happens with the orchest
interview Diabulus In Musicaral and choir arrangements, I usually check them later with Gorka and so does him when he composes something. We prefer to have a 2nd opinion and work in the last details together.

Zuberoa, You are also a classical singeress, what classical musiciens are thinking about your music?
A few people in the classical world think that heavy music it’s not very high quality one, that’s why they are surprised if they see that having a classical background you are singing “rock”, but this is because they have never listened to something similar before.

Some of my colleagues in the classical field are the choir members in our albums. At first they were really surprised when I proposed them to sing with us, they said: “but we are classical singers, how can we sing in a metal band? We don’t know how to do it!” hahah They couldn’t imagine that classical singing could fit in a “rock” band. When they saw the result they were really impressed and they love to sing with us now, they almost became metalheads! ;D

Do you have any project now?
I have just recorded some vocals and produced flute arrangements for a project called “Stardust Reverie” featuring awesome singers such as Graham Bonnet, Zack Stevens or Lynn Meredith.

Now I’m about to start the recordings for the new Diabulus in Musica album, to be released in 2014.

And any gigs previous?
Not now because we are focusing on the recordings of the new album, but we will start to search for shows as soon as the release date is set.

At last, I heard sometimes, "Diabulus In Musica is the new Epica"...what do you think about that?
Well both of us use the same elements in our music, that’s why maybe people compare us to them. All the bands are compared with others, above all if they are new. Gorka and I come from the classical field, but we are also metalheads since teenagers, so this style of music was the natural road to take for us, actually we didn't know about EPICA when we started, we discovered them later. Anyway, I don’t think our music sounds like Epica, we have some elements in common and some others that distinguish us. Anyway, it doesn’t bother me, it should be an honor as they do great music and they have become a very big name! ;D

Muchos gracias Zuberoa
