interview Benedictum1) First can you tell us the story of the band?
Pete Wells (guitar player) and I have been working together for many years both of us as with the rest of the band are from San Diego, California. We were in a band in San Diego for a while (called Malady) and we just got to a point where we were still having fun but really wanted to see what else was out there for us musically. We decided to give it one more shot and try to see if we could secure a record deal. We reformed a new band and started writing like crazy. Craig Goldy who has also been a long time friend, heard some of our practice recordings and felt that the new band we had formed was something he could really get behind. He in turn, introduced us to Jeff Pilson who was willing to take us on as producer and that’s when we did a three song demo. That demo got us a deal with Locomotive Records and then came the album “Uncreation”. We went back to Jeff again for the second album and now we have “Seasons of Tragedy”.

2) In your first album you have recorded 2 cover songs (+ 1 unreleased), why did you include only one cover song in this new album?
To be honest there was only supposed to be one cover song on the first album. The second song was only supposed to be a bonus track… the unreleased one was something we did a long time before that and was not for release at all!  Anyway, after the limited addition came out we were really surprised to see that they had printed up the actual final version of the CD with the bonus track included… we weren’t too happy about it but there was nothing we could do about it after the fact.
We included “Balls to the Wall” on “Seasons of Tragedy” because it was such a fun song and I thought it would be cool to have a woman sing it.

3) Can you tell us more about SEASONS OF TRAGEDY? The song writing processes, The recording session ect......
interview Benedictum>
Let’s start with the writing process. It pretty much stays the same as it has always been. Seems that I have always been inspired by Pete’s playing and what I usually do is listen to recordings that he gives me of his riffs or of open jams at practice and I play them over and over. There will be pieces that stand out for me and then I work with those putting melodies and lyrics and arrangements to that. We then fine tune the process and come up with a song!
As far as the recording sessions we have had to approach those a bit differently. Due to Jeff Pilsons’ touring schedule, we have to work around the times that he is home and available.
So we block short periods of time throughout. With this last album it took quite some time but I think the process gave us the advantage of being able to listen to the process in stages and afforded us the time to sit wit the music for a while and make changes the next time we were there if we needed to. With the guitars, Jeff worked so hard to get Pete just the right sound. At one point they even scrapped everything and started over, they had found a better position for the mic and also a better over all sound. Jeff really puts so much of himself into this for us and we are very grateful for that!

4) Can you tell us more about the lyrics?
Lyrics are really important to me because it seems like such a therapeutic process. In “Uncreation” that was really my first time to go deep within and express a lot of myself. With “Seasons of Tragedy” I think I may have lightened up just a bit when I wrote “Burn it Out” which is about all things that go fast! My newest obsession .
However with most of the album I wrote about things I internalise such as just trying to deal with anger and disappointment (Within the Solace), wanting people to be honest and not bull all the time (Bare Bones). My struggle with darkness (Beast in the Field) and the desire to work on being a better pers
interview Benedictumon as I go through life and how hard that is sometimes (Seasons of Tragedy). “Shell Shock” is about war from a soldier’s perspective. I find writing the best vehicle to exorcise my own demons if you will.

5) Why did you choose this name for your CD?
I think that decision came mid process. When I presented the title of the song we all just thought how powerful and fitting that title would be so we went with it.

6) What are your influences?
Everything from Tina Turner to Ronnie Jame Dio. I make it a point to listen to as much diverse music as I can so that I can learn different approaches to music. I am a huge Rush and Queen fan as well.

7) Our website is call Spirit Of Metal but what is the Spirit Of Metal for you?
That is a fabulous question. The “Spirit of Metal” for me is that energy, that drive and power that gives wings to dreams and passion. It is that raw force that drives me forward when I think I can’t do any more and it is the breath in my lungs when I say “Hell Yeah, Metal Forever!”

8) Can you tell us one memory with the band?
I would have to say our first festival which was the “Gods of Metal”. It was only our second show as a band. We had only played one show together and there we were in another country doing something we had only dreamed about. We had such a blast and we want more!

9) When will come in France?
You tell me!! We are ready… still waiting on getting more info as to what we will be doing this year. We would love to play in France…. It’s about time we did!

10) Last words a yours........
Thanks for showing some love to Benedictum. We are happy to be here and hope your fans will check us out and headbang with us!!
We love you
