Arven

Before releasing their second album "Black Is the Colour" it's time to discover Arven, a specific female band from Germany.
So listen and enjoy....

interview ArvenHello Ladies and thanks to answer to our questions, could introduce yourselves?
Elena: We are a Melodic metal band from Frankfurt ( Germany). An unusual fact about us is that we are five girls and a one guy all passionate about metal music.

How Arven is born?
Elena: The idea to make a female band came to Anastasia (guitar and songwriting). In 2007 she started to look for musicians to make her idea come true. By the end of 2007 Ines (guitar), Elena (Keys), Carina (Vocal) and Till (Drums) already joined the group. When Lisa ( Bass) joined us in 2009 we got our actual perfect lineup.

So five ladies (and one man) on your line-up? Why that choice?
Elena : The basic idea was to create a full-female band. And we were looking for a female drummer during a couple of month. Than we gave up and decided that it is not so bad to have a guy in our band. After a few auditions we met Till and we all agreed that he had to join us. We often read comments in the internet like “lucky drummer !” But in fact we all are happy to have Till in our band.

How could you describe your music?
Elena: Our music is multifaceted: The power of electric guitars and drums intersects with the melody of classical instruments and vocals. Choirs and classical orchestra give an epic touch to our music. That mix represents our special style.

With your first album "Music of Light" we discovered a metal music with also classical instruments, cello, violin; flute....is that an important point of your music ?
Till: We all like the folk or classical parts in our music, but in the first place it’s about the song. If we feel, the song needs a real violin or a flute, than we do it, but it’s not a must-have. On the new album for example there are no flutes and most of the songs have no classical instruments at all – at least if you don’t count the piano as a classical instrument. But we brought in some violins, cello and of course classical guitars.

Do you believe that a classical audience can reach your music?
Till: Well at least you can hear many classical influences in our music. And it’s not uncommon that people who are into classical music tell us they like o
interview Arvenur stuff. But of course we still play metal or rock in the first place, so if someone doesn’t get along with that, I don’t think he will get along with Arven. But luckily there are many people around who like both metal and classical music! I think the intersection set at least is bigger than with metal and dancefloor for example.

Now you are releasing your second album "Black Is the Colour" could you tell us more about that?
Till: We are very pleased with “Black Is The Colour”. The title already points out, that the music is a bit darker and heavier than our previous stuff. And most of the songs are multi-faceted and have many details to discover. But of course there are still many quite catchy melodies and some “dreamy” parts as well. We recorded the album almost in its entirety at the Bazement studio with Markus Teske who also did the Mixing and Mastering. He did an awesome job and we are very pleased with the sound he created. That’s another big improvement I think.

What are the specific differences between your two albums?
Elena : Well, the music is created not by comparing but by inspiration. In this album most of the songs are about our perception of the world in the last two years. We did not intend to make these two albums in opposition to each other, still there is a kind of opposition anyway. “Music of Light” sounds more transparent and clear. There are many folk elements and lyrics are impregnated by fantasy characters. “Black is the colour” provides more action, more energy, guitar riffs are getting harder. Also the orchestral elements deliver more epic colours to the new album.

What do you expect with "Black Is the Colour"?
Till: We want make the next step as a band. Musically, I think we definitely achieved that with this album. But of course we hope to play more gigs at bigger venues and in more countries and cities as before. It’s so much fun to play this stuff on stage and we want to reach more people who join us when we do so.

Any gigs previous?
Till: In September we play some quite big festival and open air shows in Germany. Perhaps there will be a tour in winter, but there is nothing confirmed yet. But for next year we are already booked for some more great f
interview Arvenestivals.

Till Felden, the only one men with five ladies...are you closer to paradise .....or hell?
Till: Hehe, it’s definitely closer to paradise, although there are some moments when you wish to have some guys around to escape the specific girls’ themes, for example on long road trips to the gig-venues. But to stay serious – I never was in a band with a male line-up, where all members worked so concentrated on new material like with the girls. And that is very satisfying.

And who writes the music and the lyrics?
Elena : Our main songwriter is Anastasia. Formerly we did the finishing work all together, but during last months her work was so perfect that we had almost nothing to do. Also in the new album Ines and me made our first steps as songwriters. Regarding the lyrics it's all written by Anastasia and Carina. Our common friend Benjamin Reiter (vocal and guitar in Awaiting Dawn) provided a precious help to us with arrangements and composing.

There is a lot of good metal bands in your country, is that an help for you or not?
Till: We have a big metalscene in Germany, which is cool, because there are many festivals and venues to play at, many labels and so on. I don’t think it’s either good or bad for us, that there are so many great bands around. For the fans – and we are fans too – it’s great, for the single band, of course it’s hard to stick out of the crowd of all these excellent bands.

Do you have any other project now?
Till: We just released our very first official videoclip for the opener of the new album “Believe”. That was a great experience, although it was a bit of a hard work, playing that song over and over again in that old factory hall, because it was a day with more than 35 degrees Celsius. But we’re very pleased with the result! Next step is, to go out and play lots of the new stuff.

At Last, where can we buy your albums?
Till: The easiest way is to buy it on the internet, if you don’t get it at your local recordstore. Should be no problem to find it at amazon or similar shops. And of course it’s also available as download. So check it out!
