Iota (VO)

Interview mail with Joey Toscano

interview Iota1) Can you tell us the history of the band, the beginning until now ?
Iota began in 2002 by 2 good friends (a guitar player and a drummer) from high school. We just wanted to make heavy, trippy, fuzzed out bluesy rock. The kind of music we listened to as kids when we had no cares in the world. We did some touring, some festivals, and some demos. In Spring 2007, we parted ways with our original drummer. Oz (bass) and I wrote the songs on Tales throughout that summer. We made a demo at my house with a friend filling in on drums. Small Stone Records heard the demo and asked to release the real deal. In the Fall of ’07 we hired Andy Patterson to record the album, and session on drums. The chemistry was so strong that he joined Iota permanently. We did the record in October ‘07, and then went on tour. The circle is now complete. That’s the short version, anyway.

Why did you choose this name gor you first CD? Which Tales do you want to tell to us?
We chose the word Tales for its simplicity and directness. A simple word that lets people know they are going to get a story with the songs. While Tales is not a concept album in the traditional sense, each song is a narrative lyrically and musically.

3) The artwork is very strong, can you explain it?
Brian Koschak (Kojak) did an incredible job of visually communicating the lyrics and vibe of Tales. I sent him all the lyrics and a rough mix of the album. Every single thing you see in the artwork can be found in the lyrics throughout Tales. I was already a fan of Kojak’s drug-influenced comics, so having him do the artwork just further brought to life the stories in the album
.

4) For me the CD is cut in two parts. The 2 first songs, very heavy and the 3 last, more jam song. Is it a real volonteer and is it come naturaly?
We did this on purpose, and put a lot of thought into the song order.

5) How can you describe your music?
We consider ourselves to be Heavy Psych raised on Metal. We strive to be Epic as Fuck.

6) Is there is a main theme in your lyrics?
There is no constant theme, but I do really enjoy using metaphor to express myself, and there is always another meaning below the surface. In Tales, the stories are vehicles for self-expression.

7) How did you sign on the famous Small Stone Records label? Is it important for you to sign on this label?
We love being on Small Stone, and were already fans of many of the bands. So we feel very lucky. We met Scott through the Glasspack, which we had played some shows with. put in a good word for us and over a long period of courtship, we sent SSR some demos. We finally sent him one that he liked – the jam room demo of Dimensional Orbiter.

8) Wich band give you the will to play music?
There are so many to name. We are all huge music fans, and every person in Iota comes from different backgrounds musically. Punk, Metal, and Blues have all been a constant in our lives.

9) Is it hard for you to find date in the US? Do you want to play outside the US, Europe for example?
Booking US dates is challenging for us and takes a lot of time and effort. We dream of touring Europe and would jum
p at the opportunity. Hopefully within the next couple of years we can make that happen! We would also like to go to Israel, Egypt, etc.

10) For french guy like Salt Lake City doesn’t look like a big metal scene, did I have wrong? Can you descibe us this scene?
Salt Lake City would surprise you, I’m sure. There is a healthy Metal scene out here, and has always had a strong underground. Any religious environment is going to consequently breed a colourful counter-culture. Our musical scene has included Iceburn, Gaza, Red Bennies, Ascend, Subrosa, and many more. But, if you really want to see some crazy shit, come out here and we will take you to the Southern Utah desert to visit Goblin Valley, or gaze up at the Hoodoos of Bryce Canyon.

11) Do you know the french scene?
I’m afraid that I must admit ignorance about the French music scene.

12) Can you tell us one memory (the best or the worst or the twice)
Andy getting arrested and our van breaking down on the same night is probably the winner for 2008. A good memory would probably be an underground house show in Colorado – one of the best of the year. Or jamming on stage with Rick Ferrante, of Sasquatch, in Austin. 2008 was interesting. We are looking forward to 2009.

13) What can I wish for you in the futur?
That Obama can clean up the mess Bush has made of our country.

14) Thanks for you time, last words are yours.......
Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to answer your questions. And thank you to your readers for checking us out.
