Cattle decapitation (VO)

interview Cattle DecapitationAfter 10 years dedicated to the extreme side of metal, gore obsessed Cattle Decapitation will now release their best album ever on Metal Blade in the beginning of july. "Karma Bloody Karma" is the name of this musical pure carnage & fans of schizophrenic grind/death will soon get a heart attack. This is vocalist Travis Ryan who answered my quick interview in june 2006.

>Cattle Decapitation exists since 1996, you released your fisrt official Ep "Human Jerky" 3 years later but i'm not sure every metallic froggy knows you so much. Could you make a brief summary of your band's carreer ?
We did a couple records in the beginning with just drums, guitar and vocals and slowly integrated bass and after a while we switced out our guitar player cause he was so busy in the band The Locust. We then signed to Metal Blade and have been pretty busy ever since...

>I must confess i didn't like your previous album that much. But your 3rd & brand new one titled "Karma Bloody Karma" is really good. What did you try to achieve different ? Did you eventually take notice of the "Humanure" negative reviews ?
Reviews have never meant shit to us. Some of the reviews that are bad I don't agree with and some of the reviews that praise us are full of shit in parts so why bother ? I thought the reviews for "Humanure" were not that bad. Maybe in Europe. We wanted a fresh and punchy sound from the new record and we got that. "To Serve Man" was a nightmare as far as production and we thought "Humanure" wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. People are full of shit. That's what our lyrics are about !

>I think that Cattle Decapitation is among the most
interview Cattle Decapitationoriginal bands from the USA like Cephalic Carnage for instance... Which bands do you feel closed musically or sharing the same views ?
Hey thanks ! I don't know too many bands that try to do something new. Our friends band Kill The Client has a really cool take on grindcore. Lair Of The Minotaur have their own special sound too.

>Where has it been recorded ? I find the production powerful but also a bit chaotic & i must admit it fits you perfectly. Which kind of sound were you seraching for ?
We recorded this one at a couple studios in San Diego. We got Billy Anderson involved when he told us how psyched he'd be to record us. Here's the guy that recorded some of my favorite albums (Swans, Mr Bungle, etc...) telling us we were on his top ten list of bands to record before he dies. A guy that into the project could only do us right. We're pretty happy with it.

>How do you compose inside the band ? Is it a common process ?
Works great for me... I never go to practice, they write songs and then record them and I write lyrics to those demos. That's the only way I could possibly see doing it. My lyrics flow only at certain times. I can't just go in there like "ok, lets write a song".

>You're also well known for your vegetarian message, through your covers & texts. What are the subjects you write about this time ?
This album is simply about revenge. Most of the songs tie together lyrically. Its not really a concept album though. Its a pro-environment/anti-human album, kind of like all our albums ! Haha... But no seriously, this is the best one yet. Much more interesting and it doesn't get old.

>Your new a
interview Cattle Decapitationlbum's cover is not so gory than "To Serve Man" & "Humanure" which were very shocking. Who did draw the "Karma Bloody Karma" 's one ? What is the idea behind ?
Wes Benscoter did the new one as well as the last 2. I wanted this one to be functional as the cover. In a way it sums up the running idea in the lyrics. I also knew that it had to be non-offensive so we didn't have so many problems with stores and Europe. You have to read the lyrics to understand.

>Michael Laughlin just left the band, he was replaced by J.R. Daniels from Unholy Ghost. What happened exactly ?
Mike doesn't want to tour as much as we do. We knew that he wasn't into doing a real full-time band so we were kind of already looking for someone else. JR is just filling in on these tours.

>In june & july you'll embarked for a huge tour through your country with Misery Index etc. What are your expectations ?
I think it's awesome that everyone keeps refferring to this as "the Misery Index tour". They're friends of ours so it will be awesome. Its good to see them getting tons of exposure. That's a band that's been working hard for a long time.

>Did you plan a european tour soon ? Which band would you like to play with ? Do you know some brutal french bands ?
I know they're not from there but i'd like to do a tour with the mexican Disgorge. Europe with Suffocation would be nice. We're dying to come over there. Hopefully this record.

>Well, this interview is now finished. Last words are yours, keep it brutal !
Thanks ! We hope to see you soon !
