Crónica @ Julien

25 Octubre 2007
It’s not going to be a surprise for you, knowing I didn’t really appreciate the previous opus, to hear that I was a bit concerned when I started to listen to this The Cold Heard Of The Sun. Furthermore, this album is coming out only one year after its predecessor, which is not good news either. Nevertheless, I try staying open-minded while launching the music, as only biiiips never change their mind.

The first title confirms my worries. It’s screaming, it’s fast and it’s boring. This session would have been long to me if a spike of hope didn’t make its appearance. After the two or three first titles, The Cold Heart of the Sun is becoming more melodic, more detailed and more interesting. The short passages I had appreciated on When Worlds Collide are back but here they are better used, better controlled and as a result more accessible. To summarize my impression, I would say it’s a kind of mix between Maroon and Dark Tranquillity. For the first time, I can appreciate Maroon to its true value: the one of a band who has found a style less compact and more subtle. It is over of the endless cavalcades; really melodic passages are now present with much more original soli than in the past. Even the riffs have been rejuvenated. Richer, more engaging, they are simply good. The album is even ending with a quite calm title. Nice arpeggio, singing more poised, it’s great in fact.

As far as the singing is concerned, nothing as really evolved in the sense that it is still between death and hardcore. But in this new context, it is properly shown in advantages and the overall combination is excellent. But of course, if you can’t stand this voice, the music can’t do anything to change that.

Even if it can’t compete with the last Hatesphere (funny, I had written the same thing for its precedent album), Maroon has maybe found the good formula. The fans won’t be disappointed and the neophytes may well discover that band thanks to this new album full of variations and simply more interesting…
