Crónica @ Ravenlady

Austrian Heavy Metal is the battle cry of True Metal newcomers VALSANS from Lower Austria and that’s exactly what they are demonstrating to their audience. Their first release, the EP “Dawn of Metal” which sold like hot cakes, had to be reissued several times and is now only available as a free download on the band’s website.

Sword” is the first long player of the band and took a while in the making but the time was well spent. VALSANS present themselves as a classic and true Heavy Metal band with strong influences from HAMMERFALL and STORMWARRIOR. An experienced lead vocalist backed by broad choirs, excellent lead guitars and irresistible drumming work together with marvelous and mature song writing to create an exquisite piece of art that absolutely has to bring them a wider recognition in the field.

The album starts with the powerful “Mjölnir” with a massive intro chorus. “On the Battlefield” and “Metal Crusade” are more of the same – fiercely pounding, just ideal to set a crowd on fire. “Eyes of a Viper” is the first single and the CD contains the video of this song as a bonus.

“The Allegiance” could be called THE anthem of the Metal scene, just listen to the middle part of the track: “Tell me what protects your soul – Heavy Metal does it all!” And we finally get to hear the band hymn “ValSans” with its wonderful sing-along refrain “Le val sans retour”. These two songs are sure to become absolute classics and are going to be in high demand at every future concert.

But VALSANS are also capable of slow and emotional tracks. The epic “Lady of the Lake” with its sublime vocal-guitar harmonies is the longest song of the album. The half ballad “Hall of Fame” is the only other quieter piece. Both present a good opportunity for front man Andy B. Barna to show off the emotional range of his voice.

After listening to the album several times, I can say that VALSANS are offering us fifty minutes of simply good entertainment, well produced and without any dull passages. And I am more than ready to recommend this album to any friend of HAMMERFALL, MANOWAR, STORMWARRIOR or METALFORCE.
