Crónica @ GandhiEgo

It’s a shame I didn’t get to know Yuppie Club’s first release ”Pretty Brutal”. By the likes of what my ears have been served with with their latest release ”Pretty Insane” I may only presume it was made of the same hot metal.

Yuppie Club formed back in the late 80s / early 90’s and gave it a call off in 1991. Lack of maturity or rather wishful thinking had them started and disbanded almost right away. They reformed in 2002 with a vengeance and probably more skills and motivation than just plagiarizing their idols and influences: early Grindcore acts like Repulsion, Napalm Death and the likes. “Pretty Brutal” garnered some good reviews in 2008, enough for them to deliver a second gore-splattered off(-al)ering in 2009.

I must admit from the start that I got scared a bit when I read the band’s bio and saw a couple pictures of its members. Stereotypes and preconceived ideas live a long hard life and sometimes they get hard to kill off.

First of all, it's a German band. Don't get me wrong. It's not down-right racism or something that stupid, it's just that Germany’s "Metal" history is for me some great Heavy Metal acts, some of the best Thrash Metal bands out there (but that reputation owes much to the past now) and a handful of the most disgusting (my favorite kind!) Porngrind
there is on earth. As for Death Metal, even though most may recall Morgoth or Atrocity and to some extent Torchure or more recently Necrophagist and Polymorph, Germany’s contribution to the genre may be regarded as rather poor when compared to Scandinavia, Great Britain and even so recently France and Italy. Nonetheless, I’m the kind of guy that will give everything a try so let’s get this bugger out.

Then, the dudes wear masks. Dammit! Looking at the pics, I was thinking I was booking a flight together with Slipknot, Gwar and the likes. Definitely not my cup of tea. But man, have I seen worse? I sure did and looking at my records where Ghoul and Portal have earned my esteem, who am I to judge a few masked men!! I even enjoyed Zorro when I was young (I had to insert some funky comment here. Done)

Damn, you probably got bored by now. You shouldn’t. Yuppie Club will wake your ass up. Believe me.

Musically Yuppie Club plays some pretty darn good Death Metal with a hint of Grindcore. Forget the looks, this is no stupid mallcore band with that too overpolished sound. It's not too uselessly technical like the Necrophagist's dudes and it's not your perfect yewel of ultra-produced boredom like 95% of the scene spews nowadays. Nah, they owe to their influences and respect them. Good fast solid blows in your face is what you want to expect.

Their bio says they worked with Schirenc back in their old days. Believe me they did and they did remember it too. When the all wide world of Death Metal cried and mourned the loss of Pungent Stench thanks to yet another NB scroogery, Yuppie Club decided to take the bloodied flag where it had been left.

Pungent Stench and Schirenc legacy may rest putridly in their graves for they’ve been avenged by Yuppie Club. Fans of “Been Caught Buttering” or “For God Your Soul..” will soon begin to praise the name of “Pretty Insane” for it gives the perfect tribute (with their own sick twist) to the Austrian Gore Masters.

And to top the cake with the rottenest cherry, you’ll be served with a cover of the most purtid mighty mighty Gore champions of them all: Carcass' “Exhume to Consume”, which in my book is a sign of pretty good taste and good enough reason to arouse my curiosity.

All in all, “Pretty Insane” is surprinsingly refreshing. It won’t renew the genre standards but it has enough substance to make it particularly appealing to fans all over the world with some modernity and yet that old-school feel and that perverted twist that turn any lambda record into some a-list stuff. Fill up your paypal accounts and give these guys a try. Chances are you'll be thanking me.
