Old School Technique, But Is It Enough?

Belgium is a country not famous for its metal music, especially power metal. Fireforce may be the first for their country and after their EP Moonlight Lady they released their first LP March on. I have to prepare you that this album is not presenting anything new in power metal; actually it is too difficult for a new band to show something new in power metal, so the new bands have to play something respectable and not boring.

The basic characteristic of March on is that all the songs have great riffs whether you want to listen first to “Coastal battery” or “Metal rages on”, the second one is the only instrumental moment of the album which offers a speed pleasure. Some of the songs are easily to remember at once after one listening, but some others not and may this is something which shows the luck of some things that the band has. On the good side how can you forget songs like “The only way” or “Fly arrow fly”? Fast songs and the first one is the only song with an unstoppable and offensive riffing till the end of it. There are also the two best songs in here “Moonlight Lady” and “Born to play metal”, two power – speed metal hurricanes which are nailed at the back of your head. Both of them carry the characteristic riffing of the German school and the result could not be better.

The only thing that makes me feel somehow strange and it does not heard so well to my ears is the vocals. There are some songs in which I enjoy the voice of Flype like in “Mona Lisa” and in some others I do not and I wonder if he could sing cleaner and higher. I believe that his voice as it is heard in the album fits more in a thrash metal band. I would like to hear of him singing on a different way in their next album.

Erwin Suetens is guitar brain, who can create magnificent riffs and solos and together with Steve Deleu they do great things. That riffing in here brings in mind Running Wild and Accept on a faster tempo and with the combination of their modern thoughts they are far away from imitations. Also this excellent sound is owed to the perfect work that Liapakis did behind the console.

Fireforce are a promised band, they have got the will, they have got the power and yet they luck imagination, but I do not blame for that. The future is theirs and I am sure that many of you and me among would like to hear more of them. March on is a very good attempt which derives ideas from the past and makes them one with those of the present. I believe that they can do greater things, till then I give them my vote.
