Crónica @ Julien

10 Noviembre 2007
What the Hell ! Two desertions occured in the band, among which the terrific Chris Pennie. I’m fearing the worst here. With such news in mind, how can one not have big doubts before starting the listening? And nevertheless the review has to be done, but knowing that Dimitri Minakakis is a guest further increases my doubts, because there is nothing worst than making a short appearance on the album of a band of which one was the frontman for years. For sure, one wants to play on the sensible cord here. But after all, let’s be open-minded, I’m maybe wrong to react this way.

The first notes make me feel in a familiar place, the one of The Dillinger Escape Plan. These are good news ! The band’s touch is still there, with everything you would expect. Its extreme technicality is still present and the neophyte will be dismouted by this loud debauchery. But for the hardcore fans it’s maybe going to be another story. Because despite this album has nothing to be ashamed of, it is not going to be acclaimed for its great writing style. I know such a comment is quite paradoxal when compared with the beginning of my review and at this point you must be lost. So, let me clarify all of this.
On one hand, if you have listened to Miss Machine, this new album will seem under, and you would be right, because it is indeed. On the other hand, if you have never listened to a (master)piece of work of The Dillinger Escape Plan, you’re going to be amazed by this album. It’s true that the little extra thing which would transform this album into a bomb is missing. As if this album has been written in a rush, but nevertheless written by genius. So, the quality is there while a great originality is missing.

As mentionned in my introduction, Chris Pennie is off the band, but one must nevertheless recognized that his substitute, Gil Sharone, gives complete satisfaction. His style is different from Chris’ one what brings freshness to the whole. That’s good news as it means their live performances will remaining amazing.
It’s also funny to have this chance to compare the two singers. At the end of the day, it’s indeed sad that our good friend Dimitri Minakakis left, but that’s life…
Of course, this album being a The Dillinger Escape Plan opus, the sound is going to kill more than one speaker. The loudness is huge, it’s going in all directions.

Despite being not really bad intrinsicly-speaking, this album is probably not the best so far. But maybe the issue is that it will once more require more than ten sessions to really enter in this album and to discover it’s in fact a killing. But at this stage, I consider Miss Machine superior to it…
