A very strong return for Evoken..

After an almost 5 year wait from the previous A Caress of the Void album comes Atra Mors. The album kicks off in true funeral fashion. The highly atmospheric title track to the album showcases a new line up that is more than capable of instantly get you into the world of this new album. It seems without missing a beat the band have forged a story that takes us to dreary times of the black plague. Atra Mors translates to "Black Death". I enjoyed these atmospheric passages and down tempo grooves. Distorted bass guitars that seem to stand tall in the mix and symphonic soundscapes crawl over the album. The vocal approach remains much the typical Evoken with spoken passages and aggressive grandeur. There are some instrumental songs like "A Tenebrous Vision" that help build that sadness and dire feeling of lost hope that was the black plague. Overall Atra Mors is a true return to form for Evoken, with a new line up and a long hiatus, the sense of loss and darkness is truly welcome. This album is well worth a listen!
