i was listening to that Ulver in the weekend and was really quite liking it, could you explain this band in brief please, are they second wave or what? I hope they are not that nsbm. I have outdone my music buying budget this week but would be KeeN to purchase one of there cd's in the near future

BUY EVERYTHING BY Ulver EVEN THEIR ELECTRONICA AMBIENT ALBUMS.
Um, to explain, Ulver WAS a second wave Black Metal band that heavily integrated folk elements to a point that had not been done before. Bergtatt and Nattens Mardigal are their only actual Black Metal albums aside from demos and splits, though. They released one neo-folk album in '96 (it's great) and after Nattens they completely fell away from Black Metal, creating incredible ambient albums and dabbling in electronic and glitch as well. I love all of their work except for Marriage of Heaven And Hell (I can't get over the Fact that the album is 100 minutes long) but their best Black Metal album is easily Bergtatt (one of my favourite Black Metal albums Ever) and I also love Perdition City and Teachings in Silence, but those are both ambient electronic, just so you know. But I HIGHLY recommend having an open mind and checking that stuff out too.

And they're not National Socialist. Apparently one of the reasons Ulver departed from Black Metal was due to the rising identity of nationalism within Black Metal (could have just been a rumour though).

You were listening to Bergtatt.
Their other Black Metal album is pure unfiltered rawness, and aside from one acoustic solo in the first track there are no elements of folk in it.

If you are interested in checking out a few of the later songs, listen to Blinded by Blood, Eos, Vowels, and Silence Teaches you How to Sing. It's really amazing stuff.

I don't buy stuff unless I hear it first and really like it. I still haven't listened to Paysage D'Hiver, but they are on my list!

Downloading free music should never be considered a crime. I wouldn't be aware of ANY of the bands I now listen to regularly if it wasn't for being able to hear the music for free through the internet. The underground metal scene of the 80s and 90s traded tapes like crazy, not concerned with money so much as getting their music out there and circulated by people with similar interests.
