Marduk (Everything after Nightwing)
-After Nightwing, they turned to shit. Their first five albums were atmospheric and powerful. Everything they've done post-Nightwing is overrated as hell.

I agree. I like Those of the Unlight (really gotta listen to their debut sometime), but PDM is just mind-numbing to sit through in general.

This is probably going to get me a Ton of shit but... I don't like Absu that much. Proscriptor is an absolutely amazing drummer, but something about the band really puts me off of them are. The problem I have with Tara is that the riffs aren't all that good and it's not helped when the guitar tone is a little bit weak. (like it's there, but it lacks force next to everything else) I've also heard The Third Storm of Cyrathul [sp?] and I remember thinking it might've been a good album if it was mixed better.

Honestly they're kind of a 'blah' band for me. I get why people love them, but i'm sorry Tara was tedious as Hell to sit through, barring "Stone of Destiny". I dunno otherwise.

Hey don't worry, I don't like Absu either.

fuck you all, Absu is great. Black thrashy madness man

Tara's their most straightforward, I like The Sun of Tiphareth personally, a lot more black metal-y and dense, maybe you guys'll like that if you haven't heard it?

Now for some more overrated stuff.

Beherit
-Ah, I can see Enig arguing now. Well, the atmosphere is amazing at times, but something about it seems very dull. If it's supposed to be ritualistic, then it gets that correct, but it doesn't seem to make me interested at all.

Viraemia
-Technical wankery at it's worst. The band is extremely skilled, but fuck, they can't write something good to save their lives. All they can do is succeed at being the high-pitched Brain drill.

Nile
-Everyone seems to love their newer albums when the only interesting (and in my opinion, good) thing they released was their debut.

ColdWorld
-Yes, the orchestration is amazing and all... but the actual Black Metal aspect of it is mostly boring.

Von
-What the fuck is this shit? That's all I'm going to say.

Merc, Von is what Black Metal should be about. raw and dirty.

If I wanted raw and dirty, I'd listen to Blasphemy, Sarcofago or Morbosidad. Von is just simplistic to the point of being boring.

Beherit is an acquired taste at best, i'd say. I like Drawing Down the Moon a lot, but I can see easily how people either Hate it or find it uninteresting.

I gotta agree with you about Nile though. The concept about the band is fucking cool as Hell, but the execution... meh.

Well, seeing as I am able to enjoy extremely hard to enjoy things (i.e.: Merzbow, Gnaw Their Tongues, Diapsiquir), I find it strange that I don't enjoy Beherit. I'll give Drawing Down the Moon a few more listens.

Aw, come on Merc, Beherit ain't that bad and they certainly can't be overrated. Not too many people talk about them. Out of interest though, what have you heard of them? I agree that Oath of Black Blood is a lot worse than it's made out to be (basically it's Bathory's debut album except messier in instrumentation), but DDTM was pretty damn good, not to mention creepy to boot.
