I second Merc's opinion, but I disagree about the album sucking due to
Slayer being fast.
Slayer had already proven on the previous 2 albums that they could play good songs really fast, so speed isn't my problem--it's the delivery.
Not one song other than the first and last are at all memorable (except maybe
Necrophobic), and it feels like listening to a blur of half-assed
Ideas thrown at each other for no reason. The 8 songs between opener and finale all blend into each other, which I guess is nice for a listener who likes goregrind but really... every time I listen to this album, I get bored, despite it being incredibly short. I'm fine with chaos and I'm fine with speed, but it's just so redundant by the third or fourth track that it wears on me. There can still be variety in chaos and speed, although
Slayer don't seem to want to acknowledge it on RiB. It's a great album if you want speed, but there's almost
Nothing to back that one trait up. It just feels like a flimsy album.
I guess there is structure amidst these songs, but it's hard to pay attention to when
Slayer won't stop throwing riffs and solos in your face. I feel numb to the album's supposed 'br00tal' effect it's supposed to have in the listener. RiB is an excercize in redundancy.
But I guess I have to acknowledge its massive effect on thrash to come...
...That is, they take thrash in a completely wrong direction with this album by going for no style or flair or structural ability--they just go for facemelting without giving a fuck how it sounds, and the sound is consequently terrible for about 80% of the album.
That's my reasoning for not liking RiB, if I reviewed it here on SoM it'd be lucky to get higher than 8/20. I hope I at least presented my case well.
