And as for a controversial opinion, I think traditional heavy Metal is boring as hell.

i agree, i would rather listen to punk or Hardcore than bands like ramstein or tool.

Um, somehow I don't think Rammstein or Tool count as traditional. I think Osiris was talking about the classic stuff like Black Sabbath, in which case I TOTALLY DISAGREE. Love the old stuff.

Anyway, USBM wouldn't include Agalloch and stuff like that. As I said, it's stuff in the vein of Xasthur and Judas Iscariot, and, since Osiris brought them up, Wolves in the Throne Room.

I like Sabbath and old school Doom, but what I'm really talking about is just straight up Heavy Metal like Iron Maiden, Riot, Manilla Road, etc.

I'd suggest listening to Ceremonial Castings, Averse Sefira, Woe, Twilight (it's not what you think), Bestia Arcana, Krohm, Weakling, Bosse-De-Nage, Cobalt, Demoncy (early stuff), Havohej, Profanatica, Sarcophagus, and Negative Plane if you want some good USBM though. Surprisingly, not all USBM is shit, although I would agree most of the "Cascadian Black Metal" bands suck even though I love WitTR.

I have heard Krohm and Weakling, thought they were very average. Weakling being like a weak version of Leviathan and Krohm being a weak version of Burzum.
Just been listening to 'Chaos moon' and it seems pretty good so Far

I've listened to Krohm, Weakling and Twilight, and I didn't like any of them.
I've heard good stuff about Ceremonial Castings, maybe I'll check them out.

I think you misread what I wrote earlier. I didn't say Cascadian, I said Canadian XD
Canada isn't really known for having a strong scene of any sort of Metal besides technical death. There are some good tech death bands in Canada. Oh, and under black Metal we have Gris and Sombres Forets, buts they're pretty much just USBM bands, so... :

so how many types of BM are there ?

Monday 17 June 2013 - 16:08:38
Here are some I can think of. First of all, the obvious period subgenres:
first wave (Bathory, Venom, early Mayhem)
second wave (Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Ulver)
third wave (Negura Bunget, Primordial, Urfaust)

and outside of that categorization, there is:
blackened thrash
raw or 'pure' black Metal
Symphonic black Metal
Melodic black Metal
Blackened folk or black folk Metal
Depressive black Metal
Ambient black Metal
Drone black Metal
blackened doom
blackened death
blackened shoegaze
(you get the idea--black Metal has been combined with a Ton of other genres)
USBM
(and then the ones I don't consider seperate genres)
National Socialist black Metal
White Metal, or 'unblack' Metal

I think just about every black Metal band you can name falls under one of these.

viking/pagan ? or does that fall under folk

Tuesday 18 June 2013 - 16:22:52
I would consider viking/pagan to be its own subgenre outside of black Metal for the most part, even though its roots can clearly be traced from it. But I would say that they can fall under Blackened folk as well.
