Rock and metal are often lumped together when being very general about classifying music. It's hardly a failure.

Would you rather everyone like metal and have it be as popular as Lady Gaga? I sure as Hell wouldn't.

I SAW that a little late , but i am really wondering , why not ?
Its not like we are listening metal based on its popularity , or because it seperates us from the crowd .

Yeah that's true, but things that become mainstream have a way of becoming watered-down parodies of themselves, more interested in cashing in than making good stuff.
Look at George Lucas with the Star Wars films (I doubt there's any Star Wars fans here; I'm just using this as an example). The original Trilogy (IV, V, & VI), which was humble and low-key to a lot of people, were great classics with a lot of Heart, while the newer ones (I, II, & III) were big money-makers that seemed lifeless and boring in almost every way.

Part of metal's appeal for me is The Cult fanbase. The feeling that the artists are creating music that's meant to engage and communicate with the listener rather than Drain us of our cash, the feeling that the music is almost created just for US, is one like no other. It's certainly the same for other genres too, but my point still stands.

Popularity doesnt mean that quality needs to be affected . What if all teens start to listen to metal ? Or , all people in general . Are we really afraid that our music is good only as underground and for few ? Metal isnt like that . Its a way of life . Sure , some bands would alter their style to be crowd-pleasers , but that happens already , in all styles . From Power Metal to Grindcore . Lovers of metal , and not scavengers , will always find a way to express themselves with music , and real fans will always have the quriosity to search them out.
I personaly hope this day will come , and our music will be considered everyday phenomenon, not something to hear alone in your home , or in a dark pub somewhere . I hope that kids will grow up listening to metal , even if they dont understand it , it doesnt really matter . With years , comes the experience , and with experience , understanding . What if it creates a few more teens that think they know everything . We already have those.

-That was for Infinity's comment , i didnt see the other one .

Cult appeal is not inversely proportional to the popularity of the band. I was referring more to the "brotherhood" that metal seems to have that unites us like no other music genre.

They can create music , that is meant to communicate with the crowd , but why does the crowd has to be a bunch of elitists that shun those that dont belong to the same group ? We are no higher beings with greater intellect . That music can be created for us , as you said , but that "us" can be a much bigger community . It could be everyone . Pop listeners could be metalheads . The only thing it takes is different experiences . Not Genes change .

You evidently failed to read that part.
