ENGEL is a band perhaps best known for its associated acts, such as IN FLAMES, GARDENIAN, LORD BELIAL, and EVERGREY, amongst others. It is also a band that will be turning a lot of heads over the next few weeks on account of the fact that guitarist Niclas Engelin is now touring with IN FLAMES, since the departure of Jesper Stromblad. Their first effort was met with mixed feelings, and little advertising, but was a fun little record to pass the time with for fans of Melodic Metal. After a few listens through their sophomore album, it is pretty easy to see that this band has progressed very nicely over the last three years, and that a lot more creative writing went into its production.

"Threnody" is a strong album the entire way through. There's variety, solid song structuring, beautiful mixing, and some extremely catchy vocal work to boot. One thing that "Absolute Design" lacked was guitar soloing, and while it isn't a prominent aspect of this album either, there's a lot more nifty guitar work here than you would expect. One of the things that has always stood out about this band is Magnus Klavborn's unique voice, which gives each song that special extra ‘oomph' they need to get you humming. He's back and better than ever, and a good portion of the album's range of diversity is thanks to his clever ideas.

The album is just bursting with hits! "Threnody", the first track, is the perfect introductory song with its fast paced rhythms and seamless production quality. "Sense The Fire" serves as a nice anthem for the record, with a chorus that seemingly begs to be sung along with. "To The End" is the first slower, softer song of the album, and shows you just how diverse this group of talented guys can be with their sound. "For Those Who Will Resist" really is irresistible, and probably the best car player on the album.

In most ways, this is the perfect follow-up to "Absolute Design", and fans won't be disappointed. It's a little less heavy than their first set of songs, but it's more diverse, definitely more dynamic, and a hell of a lot catchier. As it stands, they are a highly underrated group, but it's very likely that this album will change that.
