Qualities of the record are there and shine through very well
Anatomy Of I's album
Substratum is a prime example of technical death metal. Stunning technicality is displayed on the entirety of the album. Great guitar, bass and drum work show that these guys definitely know their stuff when it comes to making music.
Though that is not to say this record goes without flaws. The biggest complaint I have about this album is the vocals. They are very good vocals for the vocal specific style, yet that is just it the vocals only fill one stylistic niche. The vocals used are all in the same general style and get very repetitive and tedious after the first few tracks have completed. I will admit for the first few tracks the technically outshines the limited vocals making it seems less important. Yet as the album continues the vocals begin to wear on into monotony.
Yet the technically of the album does indeed make it a very worthy listen. While it would not be the first album I would suggest to someone who's first getting into technical death metal, the good qualities of the record are there and shine through and do so very well. Overall I'd give this album a 18/20.
