Review @ GandhiEgo

23 August 2010
Now… do we have yet a pretender for the category “Metal album of the year”? I guess you thought you did but probably you haven’t listened to Blood Revolt’s Indoctrine yet. Well, I’m pretty sure you haven’t because if you had, it’d top your damn lists.

I hate lists. With a passion. But whenever I’m given the chance to listen to a masterpiece, I have ears and they've never betrayed me. Blood Revolt is some kind of all stars band: C. “Vermin” Ross on the guitar, James Read on drums and Nemtheanga as the lead singer. If you’re into extreme Metal, you've probably at least heard of any one of them in bands like Revenge, Axis of Advance, Void of Silence or Primordial among the many other projects they are or have been involved in. With all-stars projects, you usually get some kind of all-or-nothing feeling. It's either great because the sum of all talents involved is greater than your expectations or it sucks eggs because you were waiting for the perfect combination of all these talents and it failed outrageously.

Guess what? I don't usually care much for “War Metal” as in Revenge, it makes my ears bleed too profusely and I’m also not into Primordial’s folkish stuff. But here, here, HERE is something much greater than combining some blackish/heavy’ish vocals with the heaviest form of Black Metal that was ever created. Blood Revolt has come up with some revolutionary conception, the blasting intensity of Black Metal’s finest with a few well played melodic hints and down-tempos together with vocals sometimes as warm as melting iron and sometimes as raucous as Canada’s most infernal winter weather. Basically you have the results of the original matrimony between Black Metal and Heavy Metal, not one genre with some additions from the other but the full-fledged beast.

If you were wondering why you should or should not acquire this very record and would read a few other reviews on the web, you’ll see some people complaining that this matrimony is uncalled for and rather failed. They like the music but not the vocals, or the other way around. Fuck them. In five or ten years, when Blood Revolt will be looked on as the firestarter it’s become in 2010, everyone will praise Indoctrine for what it really is: the Blood RevolUtION that it rightfully is and you'll see these scenesters crawling back in the mire saying how they all saw this coming... Just like the music here, there's no compromise: love it or leave it… now. In the end, we’ll see and judge the ones that had lukewarm feelings about Indoctrine.

Indoctrine is about war, guerilla and the denial of mankind, and as the lyrics say it and as the music proves it: there’s never been a problem that violence wouldn’t solve… The more I play this record the more it feels unsafe to be listening to it among other “humans”. I am not a violent person even though my musical tastes seem to prove otherwise but whenever I listen to the eponymous Indoctrine or Year Zero, or for what it really matters any other damn song from this record, I get nervous and start having homicidal thoughts… Seriously…

Not a safe record. Not a record that you can play half-listening to it and half-assing something else. A very demanding record but oh so exhilarating. I can only begin to fathom what it must be like to see these guys live on stage… It’s like you’d expect them to blow up the stage in the end with semtex just so they could prove their point.

What’s the point in trying to compare this to other bands? None. It’s just ground-breaking and is now a reference itself for the years to come and the worms to try and copy it.

Get your damn copy now. Don’t wait and feel sorry later that you ignored Blood Revolt when it all started…

infestuus - 23 August 2010: Putain 18 ! cet album t'as vraiment marqué ...

Demogorefest - 25 August 2010: listened to a couple tracks yesterday... very unique stuff, i need to hunt down a copy of it soon.
