The Sorrow (VO)

Interview Mail with Tobi (Bass)

interview The Sorrow1)Can you tell us the history of the band ?
The Sorrow are Mätze on the vocals and guitar, Andi on the guitar as well, Dominik on the drums and i am playing the bass. The Sorrow was formed about three years ago out of several previous bands, Andi and Mätze played in a band together before and me and Dominik as well. By the time things led to each other and we formed The Sorrow. So when we recorded our first demo, we already were band experienced and knew what´s important in the studio. Our demo got voted „Demo of the month“ in german Metal Hammer
magazine and through that we got our record deal with Drakkar

2)Why did you choose this name for your band?
We picked the name 'The Sorrow' because it´s a placative word that sounds cool. it fits the image of the band perfectly, since we don´t use to write songs about the birds and the bees. our songs deal a lot with the aspects of misery and sorrow, so we chose the word closest that can transport these emotions.

3)Wich kind of feedback did you have for your previous album?
The feedback on our old album was really amazing, from both sides, media and listeners. We even got voted album of the month in german Metal Hammer magazine. Of course there were some reviews that weren´t that cool, but that´s okay, everyone has his own opinion. And the reaction on our life shows were great as well. So we hope that the new record will be successful as well, but the reviews and the opinion of the medias are not as important to us than the response of our fans. But it already started good, we got voted Album of the month in Rock Hard Greece, so we are already relieved a little bit

4)You go on tour with Sepultura, is a dream come true?
Indeed, it´s great and we are already really excited, but we haven´t dreamed of a tour with Sepultura.
interview The Sorrow They were heroes in our youth with Max and Iggor Cavalera, they are still good, no doubt, but it´s just not the same anymore. I already saw them with Derrick years ago and it was really cool i have to admit. We will have a great time!

5)Can you describe us your new album?
The new record is much more mature than the old one. It unite so many styles of the Heavy Metal culture from the last three decades. It´s heavier, but really epic on one side. Give it a chance, you might like it... We do like it

6)Can you describe us the songwritting?
For this album we wrote the music in about three months, mostly by Andi and Mätze in front of the PC and with a drumcomputer. Later on we practised the songs together before we hit the studio. We had to do it this way because we had not much time between all the touring, festivals and our dayjobs. But it turned out really good. Though we try to do the whole songwriting the old fashioned way next time.

7)What is the thems of your lyrics?
The lyrics are dealing with a lot more interpersonal issues than on the old album. They tell about the storm that disorders your life when a beloved person lies to you big style, when a friend dies or about an abandoned child. Maybe it was even a cathartic way of writing. But there is also the song “Anchor in the storm” that pays respect to those, that stood beside us in stormy times and helped us back to our feet.

8)What is your best memory with the band?
Playing in Wacken was one of the best moments in my life. So many people in such a small village, it was great. I also remember when we played festival in the Czech Republic when Jeff Waters from Annihilator was standing at the side of the stage watching the show. Afterwards he came towards us and said, that he really, really enjoyed our show. We were really proud as
interview The Sorrow you can think

9)What is the Spirit Of Metal for you?
Metal for me means to enjoy life everyday, but also speak free if something bothers you. This music means my life, it has all the energy to get me through the day. No other style can express human emotions better than Metal.

10)What is your influences?
There are so many bands, that influenced us, so i can´t mention them all. There are the classical Heavy Metal bands such as Judas Priest or Iron Maiden as well as the swedish Death Metal bands, for example In Flames, Soilwork or At the gates. But the newer generation of heavy bands like Killswitch Engage or Unearth had a big input on our music as well. And the bands we alway love to listen to are Machine head and Pantera.

10)Can you describe us the Austria scene?
It´s small but fine. There are more smaller communities than a really networking scene, except of the bigger cities of course. The kids try hard, they put up shows and play in bands and exchange gigs, that´s a good thing. Besides the big bands like Belphegor, Hollenthon and of course Pungent Stench, check out “In Slumber” from Linz or “Before the fall” from Vienna, really great bands.

12) Do you know the french scene?
I don´t know a lot french Metal bands unfortunately. The first french band, that comes to my mind is definitely Gojira, they carried progressive Death Metal to another level. I like Dagoba as well, they are really original in their style. And i know the band Sikh, they signed to Drakkar recently, but they sound to much like New- Metal to me, and that´s not exactly my taste of music.

13) Last word are yours.........
Thank you for the interview guys. We will be back in France as soon as possible, see you all at the shows! Stay true and horns up...
