This NKM Fest 2011 in Finland, Tampere, was a great gift to me – some amazing bands in one place the same weekend. Melodic death metal band MyGrain was my favourite on Friday, and also I was lucky to meet the vocalist, Tommi, and the keyboardist, Eve, and discuss with them their music, gigs and life in general. This band is a very positive and full of energy; I hope you also will be lucky to see them live once. But for now - just some questions and answers that can help you understand the character and nature of the band.

interview MygrainSo, how your summer is going?
Tommi: It’s going pretty well. It’s just started; all the summer festivals are ahead!

Eve: My summer is not that easy, I have a little baby at home, so I’m staying at home and basically the only thing that makes me go outside is a gig.

How old is your baby?
Eve: 5 months.

Onni: Congratulations! And also you have like another baby, your latest album, please tell us about it!
Eve: Well, now it’s almost half a year after the release.

Onni: The same age with your baby!

Eve (laughs): Yeah, actually, they were born the same week.

Onni: I guess it was difficult.

Eve: It was in a way, because we had only a few weeks after my labour when our gigs started, but… There were no options! It was pretty hard, but it was also fun.

Are you satisfied with the result?
Tommi: Yeah, I think, all of us are satisfied with the result, the feedbacks have been positive all the way, and we have had a lot of gigs after the release.

Now when it’s been half a year after the release you can compare it to other albums and analyze how it is going, does it have a success? Was it that you have expected?
Eve: Personally I’ve had a kind of expectations with this kind of music we play… We make music that we love. Also we have a new guitar player, some new influences, and it was a feeling that it might be good. But everything has been even better!

You said that you play music that you like. How do you think, do other people like it?
Eve: It seems so! All the reviews and gigs, everything has been much better than before. And we have been to Tokyo which has been really nice. It was nice to see that we have fans also over there. It’s been many times better after the release of this album.

Have you been to many countries?
Tommi: No, actually, it was the first time we played outside Finland. It was only the one gig, but we were there the whole week, except Eve.

Eve: Yeah, I stayed there only for a weekend.

Onni: I guess it was a great experience!

Tommi: It was really! All the way. The gig and the whole trip.

What was the most difficult?
Tommi: The flight. Such a long flight, you know, hard to get a sleep. All things concerning the gig went well, the crowd was awesome.

Eve: In a way we have also visited Russia, you know, the flight went for 80% above Russia! (laugh) We were waving you from the airplane!

Tommi: Actually, maybe – maybe, we are not sure yet! – we will soon visit other countries as well. We h
interview Mygrainave some invitations being discussed.

Could you describe the evolution of your music from the previous albums to this point? How do you understand and what has changed for yourselves?
Tommi: We have this new guitarist, Mr. Downhill, and he has brought so many new influences to the music. It has been the natural development, more progressive parts made the music richer.

Eve: I think the previous albums were more straight. And when Mr.Downhill came along we turned to a more progressive style.

Can you say that you are already a mature band and you have found your own style? Or will you be different on the next album?
Eve: Definitely there’s always something going to be different. I think this was just the first album with Mr. Downhill and kind of getting to know each other, and we are going to develop the music on the next album.

Tommi: The music making methods remain pretty much the same as it was with the previous album. We go to the rehearsal room and basically Resistor, Mr. Downhill and DJ Locomotive brings the first ideas, and then we just jam along and develop them. Everyone brings something own into the song.

Eve: Somethimes it was a bit scary to explore the progressive elements. We thought, are we going too far with all that new elements and should we accept them? Do we sound like the same band that we were on the first and the second albums? But now when I have seen that it works I see we don’t have to be scared anymore, we should keep going with the exploring without a fear of using any new elements – pop music, progressive or anything else.

Tommi: Yeah, or even more brutal!

Eve: You never know!

I’ve read on the Internet that the new album is smoother and kind of even more pop than the previous ones…

Eve: We have found that one of the strongest sides of our band is the choruses, and we are not afraid of using them. When we have the strong chorus, we can do anything we want in the rest of a song. That’s the main thing now.

Tommi: I think it adds a lot of dynamics to the songs when we have some more pop elements and then comes the rough part.

What about your ideas, what do you want the audience to feel and know?
Tommi: Mostly it’s about everyday stuff; I stay behind this curtain of sci-fi. It’s not about sci-fi but the words are in sci-fi style. I think everyone can find his own interpretation for it. There are no certain methods.

Onni: So you don’t have any particular philosophy.

Tommi: No! (laughs) I’m just a regular guy!

Is the band just a hobby for you?
Eve: It’s a really dear hobby. To become a rockstar is not the main point. It’s more like a lifestyle. I guess we have nev
interview Mygrainer dreamed of living only with the band. We have our day-jobs. Me and Mr. Downhill work at the same videogame store.

Tommi: I work in the travel agency, travel business.

Onni: So you can arrange some travels for your band!

(laugh)

Tommi: Maybe one day.

Can you remember any funny cases from concerts or studio work?
Eve: There’s plenty of…

Tommi: Yeah, many of them! But nothing particular comes to my mind now… Actually, once I have almost fallen off the stage, it was “on the rocks” in Helsinki. It was slippery, water or beer on stage. I’ve stepped there and fell down on my ass on the edge of the stage, you know, happily I didn’t fall off. I just continued singing.

Eve: I always have bad dreams about the gigs.

Onni: Like no one will come there?

Eve (laughs): No! That has happened! (they laugh) When we have just started. I’ve had bad dreams about keyboard stand falling down over and over again, and it’s a really important gig and everything goes bad… But it hasn’t happened yet!

What about your families and friends, do they support you?
Tommi: They are great! My brother actually has been printing all there flyers, stickers and posters. My father has been at our gigs every time we play in Helsinki. It’s nice.

Eve: Yes, there was a bad stage at some point when I was a teenager, you know, they were like “ah, what is she wearing” and stuff like that, but then I’ve explained them some stuff and they’ve seen I really enjoy this.

What gig has been your best so far?
Tommi: The gig in Tokyo. The crowd was so amazing that we have never seen before.

So maybe it’s better to play abroad than in Finland?
Eve: I guess it depends on the country. It depends also maybe on the promotion and the time when the album is out. First time in Japan, and there on that concert were also Moonsorrow and Korpiklaani and others that people wanted to see. The audience seemed probably to be more loyal than in Finland.

Tommi: It seemed that they don’t need any alcohol to get into the mood. They were going crazy from the first chords, all the fists in the air.

Eve: Different culture.

Onni: Don’t Finnish metalheads do that?

Tommi: They do when they are drunk.

Eve: Basically. But I’ve heard that the crowd in Russia is different…

Onni: Who told you?

Eve: Almost all the bands I know who have been there were really pleased with the gigs.

Are you serious band or do you have a lot of fun in the backstage etc?
Eve: We don’t see each other that often, and when we meet we party.

Tommi: No, we are not serious!!! (laugh) We are funny band!
