Masachist (en)

Masachist are a Death Metal band from Poland. After releasing 3 years ago their debut Death March Fury, the band recently gave birth to their sophomore material entitled: Scorned. It was then the occasion to ask Thrufel, Masachist's eminence grise, a few questions.

interview MasachistHi Thrufel, thank you for accepting this interview for Spirit of Metal. Let’s get straight to the point and into the matter of things. Three years have passed since the release of Masachist’s debut “Death March Fury” on Witching Hour and your sophomore effort “Scorned” on Selfmadegod. What took you so long and why the change of label?
Hi! Thank you for your interest in our band. Well… to be honest we didn’t feel rushed in any way, there was no pressure from anyone. It might be a stupid example and a bit arrogant on my part, but how long do we have to wait for the next Slayer album?  So I think it’s not so bad in our case. And I don’t see anything wrong with that. I’m not a painter and I can’t write a good song every week. A lot of things have to happen, I just need to feel that this is the right moment to start creating something and developing it further. The music, the songs, the entire concept appears in my head, and then my intuition tells me that it’s the right time. And I honestly don’t know why we changed the record label. Witching Hour seemed interested when they first heard the album, but after a while their initial enthusiasm was gone. Maybe they have some kind of trouble with the label right now, I don’t know. But it looks like they slowed down a bit, they didn’t do anything spectacular lately. But we received an offer from Karol and his Selfmadegod Records, and the rest is history. For me this is great, new channels of distribution and maybe a different approach to promoting the band.

“Death March Fury" garnered some very positive reviews among Death Metal fans. It was relentless brutal aggression from start to finish. “Scorned” still has its faire share of brutal tracks but also displays a new more “dissonant” and sometimes slowed-down orientation. When comparing the two records, I can’t help but think about the transition that took place between Reign in Blood and South of Heaven. What motivated this change?
So the Slayer comparison wasn’t so far-fetched after all  Yes, DMF was just an eruption of our aggression, that’s how we felt at the time. You know, in our personal lives, etc. Three years later comes Scorned, which is a more mature and thought out album. I think we are getting closer to defining our style, I’m certain it will only get better.

Lyrically speaking, a change also seems to have taken place. Past the lyrics related to war and death featured on “Death March Fury”, “Scorned” seems to explore more personal and intimate subjects which would explain the change in music as well. How does one go from “Hail of Bullets/Bolt
interview MasachistThrower” kind of lyrics to something more a la Gorguts' Obscura?
The lyrics on the first album were the same as the music. Fast death and total destruction of everything. It was nothing groundbreaking really. This time we went for ritual death in relation to the culture of the Far East and the ideals of the Bushido code. This is still dark subject matter of course, as it should be with Death Metal.

Knowing how it goes in the scene, are you not afraid that some fans, who were certainly expecting some kind of Death March Fury part 2, will see this new orientation as some kind of “treachery” (some will eventually adopt it because I personally think it’s a grower past the initial surprise) or do you not care at all?
No, I have no problem with that. People have to accept the fact that we are an ambitious band and we don’t want to be the new Motorhead. With all due respect for this great band of course. A lot of people were disappointed that we stepped outside the frames of Death March Fury and went for a slightly different kind of Death Metal. For me this stuff is still very brutal and at the same time more refined than the first album. It’s like a precise strike with a sword.

Are there any plans to support the release of the new albums, like touring Europe? Any other thing?
We never make any plans. Maybe someone will offer us something, maybe not. I won’t hide the fact that I would like to play some festivals. Our promoter Greg from Godz ov War promotion is working on it. I hope something will come out of it, especially since there’s a really good feedback to our music at this moment. Much better than it was with our first album.

When preparing the interview, a few friends “intervened” and had their own questions so now I feel obliged to ask them out, hope you don’t mind. One is related to Sauron but you’re welcome to answer it as well. What does he/do you think about the evolution of Decapitated’s music and why did he eventually leave the band? And do you think the musical late evolution in Decapitated can be compared to that of Masachist?
Sauron certainly has fond memories of that band, but the main reason for his departure was that he just wasn’t that much into touring, and they tour almost all the time. It’s not an easy lifestyle and not everyone wants it. And besides that, Decapitated drifted away from its Death Metal roots and it’s just not his thing anymore. Sauron is very strict when it comes to Death Metal, he is an orthodox fan of the genre. He doesn’t consider the “new” Decapitated as a Death Metal band, and that basically says it
interview Masachist all. From the very beginning I’m conscious of the fact that any member can leave my band at any moment. But it’s not a problem. Everyone’s replaceable. I write the music for this band, so our direction will never change.

Another and last question from one of my friend (he lives in France and is a die-hard fan of Polish Death Metal). After the release of albums in 2011 of Poland’s “blockbusters" (Decapitated, Azarath and Vader), 2012 saw the coming of age of lesser known bands like Hell United, Hellspawn and Embrional (among others). Knowing the scene certainly better than us for being a part of it, what Polish bands could we expect to kick some serious ass in the near future?
Poland has a good Death Metal scene and we are equally good with Black Metal. This is our strong feature. But unfortunately I don’t see anyone who could completely annihilate me with their music. The bands you mentioned (with the exception of Hellspawn which I’m not familiar with) are all veterans of the scene and you can’t really call them “a new wave”. These are mostly old maniacs.

Before I give you room for some final words, here’s the “what the fuck” question! It’s trick or treats!
You asked really cool questions, thanks for that!

Have you ever considered dating Doda to boost your career?
Ha ha... If she only knew that Nergal promoted her and gave her a career outside of Poland, she’d be so happy that her big tits would explode  I think that everyone would like to date her because she is a good looking chick. But we’re too busy… with DEATH METAL!
