Karma To Burn (en)

Karma to Burn, sometimes known as K2B, is a desert rock/stoner metal band from Morgantown, West Virginia comprising guitarist William Mecum, bassist Rich Mullins, drummer Rob Oswald and vocalist and guitarist Daniel Davies. The band was noted for their uncompromising, mostly instrumental sound. I got to talk with their awesome drummer Rob about the new album, how Karma to Burn came to be and some of their future plans!

interview Karma To Burn
Kate: Hey Rob, thanks for doing this interview, how are you?

Rob: Things are great, just psyched for this album coming out!

Kate: How did Karma to Burn come about?
Rob: Well, I wasn’t around for the first record. We all came from the ashes from other bands really. I was playing in Mondo Generator before I started playing with these guys. We’ve all been friends so we all really gel well together. It’s kind of weird how all of our minds think alike but it’s weird in a good way.

Kate: What can fans expect from “V”?
Rob: It’s really just a continuation of “Appalachian Incantation”; we wanted to keep it that way. But there are three tracks with vocals and five that are instrumental. We did a Black Sabbath cover to which is pretty cool.

Kate: Definitely, I love that cover!
Rob: Thanks!

Kate: How do you think you’ve progressed over the years as musicians?
Rob: Not reall
interview Karma To Burny too much as far as changing (laughs). I think we’ve definitely progressed as human beings. We have a lot more fun now and I think we have more respect for each other.

Kate: As far as songwriting goes is it a team effort, do you guys build on what one person brings to the table?
Rob: Yeah, one of us will come up with a riff. It will usually happen somewhere like at a sound check or something like that or we’ll be sitting in the back in the van and it will just pop in somebody’s head. We try to stay out of each other’s way though till it happens. We don’t try to stress or force it. We try not to think about it and that’s when it will happen.

Kate: Yeah, that’s usually the case when you’re not thinking about it will usually just happen.
Rob: Exactly, it’s a very organic process.

Kate: So who have been some of your influences over the years?
Rob: I listen to a lot of styles. Deep Purple, Minute Men, Black Sabbath of course but I also love music from the 20’s and 30’s. There
interview Karma To Burns a lot of great music that came out of that period.

Kate: Will you guys be doing a U.S tour after your European tour?
Rob: Yeah, that’s the plan. We’re going to be in the studio for a bit at the end of the week and then we’ll go on tour. But you never know with the rapture coming and everything! (laughs)

Kate: Seriously, it’ll be very interesting to see what happens on Saturday.
Rob: Definitely (laughs).

Kate: Any words for your fans?
Rob: Just thabnks for all the support, it's been really awesome seeing people at shows. I've seen friends at some of our shows that I haven't seen in like twenty years!

Kate: Well, anytime you'd want to come out to Hawaii to play we'd love to have you!
Rob: That would be really awesome, we'd love to do that one day.

Kate: Thanks again so much for doing the interview Rob and we’ll hopefully talk soon!
Rob: Definitely, anytime! Thanks Kate!
