Coram LEthe (VO)

interview Coram LetheLet me introduce you to the world of Coram Lethe. This melodic death-metal new band from Italy just released their 1st album on Crash Music. An interview done by email in september 2005.

>Hi guys ! I recently received your new album from Crash Music's french promotional department. I must admit your play metal with class & power, but could we begin this interview with an history of your band ? Where/when/why did you create Coram Lethe ?
The band was formed in September 1999 by Mirco and Leonardo that decided to call Francesco to make a Death Metal Band. Then, after a first meeting Francesco introduced me in the band. And that was the beginning ! From that point we started to see that a lot of music was coming out, and so we decided to record a demo. In June 2000 we published “Reminiscence”. After that we started to have gigs and very good reviews, but no deal. So in 2003 we decided to record an album with our money and then find someone to publish it. In this way we met with Rising Realm Records and Crash Music that gave us the possibility to join a great number of countries with our music…thanks!

>This band name may sound a little bit strange for me. Is there a special meaning behind it ?
The name is in Latin : Coram means “near” or “ in presence of”, while “Lethe” is the name of an imaginary river that appears in Greek mythology and even in Dante's Comedy. The river's water gives oblivion to the people who drink it. The meaning of our name is that in every human being there is a dark side (the madness, the anger) to wash away.

>Let's talk about \"The Gates Of Oblivion\" now. Is it your first album ? What did you release before ? In which way did you try to evolve through the last years ?
TGOO is our first official album but, as I've said before, we have published a self- produced demo in 2000 and we printed it in 500 copies. We always try to keep death metal in first position, trying to make it as more personal as possible with the insert of non-death styles like funky, rock or whatever we think it would be necessary to keep the listener's attention high . So we focus our work on making good riffs and to mix them in the best way so we can give emotions to the crowd. I hope we'll always be able to do that!

>Where did you record
interview Coram Letheit ? Was it a cool experience ? Are you satisfied with the final production ? Do you like to work in studios ? Or are you definitely a live-band?
We record the album in Alfonsine (Ravenna) at Fear Studio. The producer was Paso (Ephel Duath, Kiju). He is a great producer with an incredible patience and dedication to his work. It has been a very good experience that involved us in a step over. Paso always try to obtain the best from you and if he isn't satisfied, it's a problem for you! But I think that it has to be so. He is the producer and so he knows better than us when the product is good. We love to work in studio because we find that this experience makes us grow up in technical side. But we love so much the live dimension! The contact with the crowd, the impact that our music has on people, to see the guys' faces off the stage! It's a very powerful experience for us!

>If I say you sound like a mix between old-school and new-school death-metal with a large dose of melodies, do you agree ? If I say when I listen to your new album Arch Enemy, Death and Nevermore are some bands that come to my mind. Do you agree ? Which bands did you listen to when being a kid ?
If you compare our music to this bands I can only say thank you! They are incredibly good bands and for me is an honour to be “like” them. These are some of the bands that we listen to. Our musical background is very different. I was grown with Queen, Beatles, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and then moved to prog, death and jazz-rock at the same time. The other guys had a more metal oriented teenage, but all of us has a rock background. I think it is important to know where Metal music came from because, has every genre, it hasn't come from nowhere. So if you have good musical culture, you can better compose good things because you have large terms of comparisons.

>What are these \"Gates of Oblivion\" ? Lyrically speaking, what do your texts deal with ? Do you have a particular message to spread ?
The lyrics on \"The Gates of Oblivion\" speak about the madness of the times we live, the madness of people, of the world, the dark side of every human being, the errors of our society that thinks to be over the nature. Every song has a story , it's not a concept album. The only thing that is in common is the oblivion….

<
interview Coram Lethestrong>>Italy may suffer the same syndrome than France. Both countries have a strong metal potential, but each one is rather unknown outside its borders. From your point of few, what are the reasons for this unjust lack of recognition ?
This is a problem that comes directly from us. I think that a German band becomes famous first in Germany and the outside. In Italy, and I think in France too, people need to know that a band is already famous to look at it with interest. This is not a good thing because a big label thinks “if they're not famous in Italy, why they should be in Germany?”. The problem is in our approach to new band and new thing in genre, I think.

>Let's talk about something different now. Al-Qaida declares after London bombings that Italy & Denmark are their main targets for future terrorist attacks (even if it would be silly for other countries to feel safe). What do you think about it ? Is it something you're afraid of ?
I'm afraid of this things, but I think that you have to go on and look to the future with a good vibe. I think that these war that we're fighting is just another war, as in the past. I don't believe to the cultural or religious war that media wants us to believe in. I think that the reason of everything is money. We're fighting with Arabs for Oil and they are just replying with the way that they know better, and the only way they can. There is no good and no evil in this situation. We, normal people, and Arab normal people are the only victims of these situation while Al-Qaida and our politicians think to earn more money as they can.

>What are your plans for playing live these coming months ? Do you know if Crash Music will make you play outside your country ? (Last words are yours / Thanx for your answers).
We'll be in a mini tour in Italy with Dismember, in December. For the moment that's it, but we hope to get as many gigs as possible. I hope that Crash will help us to find some gigs outside Italy, for the moment we're working to find some and to promote our album in best way is possible. Thanks for your help and I hope that the answer are good for you. For the people who are reading, please listen to our record and fell free to write us what do you thing about it! That would be very good for us! Thanks to all of you guys and stay metal!
