Animals Killing People (en)

Hi Eston and thank you for this interview for Spirit Of Metal.

interview Animals Killing PeopleYou’re Animals Killing People's new singer. I tried and looked for information on you and found out you used to sing for a NY band named Merciless Mutilation. And that amounts to how much I know you… Could you tell me more about yourself?
Of course. I started out playing in death metal and grindcore bands since I was 14 and in high school. I got into extreme music when I was 11 and there was no turning back from there. One of the first death metal bands I got into was Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Malevolent Creation, Death, etc and I just wanted to be apart of that scene. Merciless Mutilation was the first band I did vocals for. I was with that band for about 4-5 years and we parted ways as of last year. I'm a current native of New York and besides Animals Killing People, I'm in experimental death metal band Humanity Falls. I bounced around in a few other bands in mean time and nothing was ever serious but I think I've found my niche with AKP thus far. It's been a blast!

People familiar with AKP know that the band promotes vegetarianism and is mostly against animal torture and a fierce advocate of animals rights. Was that a prerequisite to become one of AKP’s members and how did you guys get together?
I'm firmly against animal cruelty, but it wasn't the reason why i joined the band.

As you know, Wilson used to be a member of local band Copremesis. I've seen them a few times in the last few years and I try my best to get heavily involved in the local scene here. I actually heard of AKP through Paulo (guitarist and vocalist of Copremesis) and him and I are pretty good friends. I was in need of a band to join so he recommended a few other bands along with Animals Killing People. Those other rehearsals fell through and I felt like AKP was the kind of band I wanted to be apart of so I tried out for the band and Manuel and Wilson liked what I brought to the band so thats how I ended up being apart of AKP.

When releasing Human Hunting Season in 2004, it turned to be quite a debut EP and it gained great popularity in the underground scene. So much, that it got rereleased in 2006 with an extra track. Still it took about 4 years for AKP to release Kentucky Fried Killing. What’s the story behind the wait?
I'm not sure. That is a good question.. honestly I think the story behind the 4 year wait is because the band always had a problem finding a consistent vocalist and one for live situations. Andres Usma and Justin Boehm are both session vocalist for the 2 albums, and they both are not close for shows and etc. In addition to that, there was a problem finding a bass player so that slowed things down. Luckily we've got both fixed now, so things should be progressing fast now than ever before!

Most people get frantic about AKP’s cover of Bolt Thrower’s World Eater and that would include me as well. For a band whose sound is much closer to the likes of Disgorge, Brodequin or Devourment, it was a refreshing choice but also an unexpected one. Hence the question, among all the old-school bands out there, why did AKP choose to cover Bolt Thrower?
Wilson is a huge Bolt Thrower fan, so it came as no shock to me...and Bolt Thrower played a bit of an influence on Manuel so it seemed like a good fit for them to do that. Seeing them at this years Maryland Death Fest was a special thing for me, and Bolt Thrower are just an exceptional band. Plus not many people cover them and it was something new for them to try. However, I would've preferred a cover off of 'War Master' though. :)

Some people complained about the mix on Human Hunting Season and others thought your song structures were a bit too erratic. I believe that this gave the EP its main force because the many unexpected turns of the music and the overwhelming vocals felt dizzying and surprisingly or
interview Animals Killing Peopleiginal. Does Kentucky Fried Killing offer the same approach or did AKP go into yet another direction?
I think Manuel and Wilson turned it up on Kentucky Fried Killing in every aspect. I was really impressed on the difference in speed on the recording. Especially since it is the first full length and you always want to make the first one memorable. The music is a lot faster, catchier and the production is a lot better from the EP. The sound should always progress from each recording to the next and I think they did that successfully with the full length. There are a few flaws, as with every recording, but I think we will work out the flaws in the near future.

It must be quite thrilling to get into a new band. Have you already started adding the “Eston” touch to AKP’s music, have you guys toured together and what is AKP’s agenda in the near future? Will we have to wait another 4 years to get a sequel to Kentucky Fried Killing or do you think that AKP’s line-up is stable enough to take a bigger part of the Death Metal cake?
Another 4 year wait? Hahah. I hope not!

The thrill of being in a new band is phenomenal. I have definitely added the 'Eston' touch to the Animals Killing People material and it seems like many like it so far! Me and Wilson toured together in Colombia last year, and we've played a few shows around the United States. Few and far between. Manuel couldn't make it with us last year, but it was a great time regardless. We had to part ways with Manuel, but he's still got a spot in AKP if he ever wanted to return. We've got a full line-up and I think it's going to be this way for quite some time, so hopefully the sequel will come sooner than you think!

Death Metal has gone in several directions. There are the Death Grind bands like yourselves, Technical stuff, Brutal stuff and even an old-school revival. Do you care about the other scenes or is there stuff you simply can’t listen to? Which by the way brings the next usual question: what are your favorite bands out there and do you only listen to Extreme Metal?
For me, there doesn't seem to be anything unbearable to listen to...besides the current trend of 'death-core' or 'metal-core' or any of those other sub-genre terms everyone seems to label bands with. As long as its metal and it doesn't bore me, I'm fine with it. I'm into tons of styles, so I can get into it all. I just went to see Burnt by the Sun and Kayo Dot, so that could tell you a little something about my musicial choices.
My favorite death metal band is Immolation. I can't get enough of them. This list of favorite bands can go on and on but recently I've been getting into a lot of Indonesian brutal death scene. Digging Up, Jasad, Asphyxiate have been getting listened to a lot. Disgorge, Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Pestilence, Malignancy and a lot of Ulcerate, Discordance Axis and Foetopsy. I recommend anyone into death/grind to check out those bands. I'm into a lot of different styles, so I can get into it all. My favorite type of extreme metal would probably be black and doom metal, ironically.

For Kentucky Fried Killing, AKP signed on Sevared Records, home to some other sick brutal bands like Gorevent, Sepsism or Viral Load. What was behind the decision on leaving Goregiastic? Could we expect a “Sevared Records”’ bands European tour in the not too distant future?
Internal Suffering broke up around 2004-05 and Andres moved to Colombia, so this might be the reason for AKP leaving. As for a European tour, we'd love to do one and have been talking about it, but we will see what the future holds! I'd love to see whats going on over there.

Your music uses quite a few movies samples, very much like bands like Mortician or Impetigo. I was always quite curious on how you guys manage to find them (and where!)... Do you guys gather on the couch with beer and pop
interview Animals Killing Peoplecorn and spend endless hours watching “classic quality movies”?
No, that's Wilson. He's a avid movie goer and he watches movies a lot so the clips were done by him. I'm not such a fan of samples unless they're needed, but he did a great job on Kentucky Fried Killing. We do however sit back, smoke pot and watch a movie or two.

Back to Animals Rights. Cattle Decapitation is another band that also “militates” against animal abuse. Do you know of others in the Metal scene and are you guys in touch in one way or another or is your approach different from theirs? As an “animal activist”, does that also influence your musical choices (not touring with a specific band?) and what is the fans’ response towards this “raison-d’etre”?
I'm not aware of any bands that focuses only on regulation of animal abuse and animal cruelty the way Cattle Decapitation and AKP does. I would like to think that a lot of bands (preferably grindcore) do sing about these things, but not as a primary source of their lyric writing the way we do.

However, I do think Animals Killing People sends the wrong idea to those viewing the band in the third person and that people take the image of the band on the surface a little too seriously. We all have a love for death metal and we think animal cruelty is wrong, so combining the two just seemed like the best idea. We just approach the idea a little different. Instead of being like other bands who sing about horror movie styled killings, rape, incest and sacrilegious beliefs, we've just went with a different lyrical approach...something that is as real as it is comical. Animals who are taking over what's rightfully theirs, the Earth. We don't use this band as a way to spread propaganda and tell people to turn vegan. We just want to bring to the attention of death metal fans and meat eaters alike the consequences and the truth behind what you consume daily. Some people aren't aware, so we just like to educate the masses.

This whole business of animals rights seems to be the foundation of AKP. Still, I can’t help the feeling that maybe, sometimes, you’d wish people were talking about something else and asking you other questions. Am I somehow right or is AKP’s main goal about denouncing animal abuse and nothing else really matters?
I believe you are absolutely correct. We do receive a lot of these questions at our shows so getting asked the same questions can be quite monotonous and irritating...on our part and interviewers both. Animal abuse is wrong and we do advocate that in music, but we like to leave that with the music only...so yes, asking us other questions is highly encouraged (and original, too!)

Thanks for your time and all the best for you and Animals Killing People. Thanks for the interview… Any last words?
Yes. I would like to say that the current state of metal is getting very pathetic. People stop ruining the scene with unoriginal and recycled music. There is more to life in music than living and relying on your myspace pages. There is a whole world out there for us musicians!

Go out to your local record stores, put up fliers, tell your friends and support your fucking bands! I get so sick of people only downloading and buying shirts but never going to the shows. We are not here to support your fucking mp3 collection. Shows are not that expensive! I am guilty of downloading, but I still purchase CDs and spread the word of spectacular bands that merit it. This death metal scene is not dead! I want to keep my scene alive, but if you care about this music the same way I do, then please follow. The only way the bands will survive is if you go and see them!!!!!!!

With each kill we depopulate this filthy planet, so please help our animals friends out and start killing more fucking people!
