Биография : Canvas Black

Canvas Black saw the first light of day back in 2012 in Bergen, Norway. The band was formed by 3 childhood friends who shared a deep interest for metal, progressive music, hip hop and especially death metal. They all grew up together right outside of Oslo, Norway. The original lineup was bass played by Christian Fredrik Steen, guitar played by Adam Sjåstad and vocals by Magnus Røed. As 2012 progressed and Canvas Black started working on their first tracks and gathered up additional members. First guitar Martin Aadland, guitar and effects Morten Pedersen, violin Amalie Boge and Felix Emanuel Ljungquist on drums. In short period of time Canvas Black went from a three-piece to a seven-piece Norwegian death metal band.

By the time CB got in the rehearsal space they already had material ready for the first EP. CB spent about a year practicing the songs and by January 2013 they were recording the first drum tracks for the EP. Time was spent trying to figure stuff out and defining the sound as they were moving along. By the end of July, CB had recorded all the tracks and released their self-titled EP on October 31st, 2013. All of the recording, mixing, mastering, marketing and publishing was done by Canvas Black.

The EP got several reviews and it seemed like people were getting the point. "Only some instrumental technical death metal bands and almighty Gorguts have talent and imagination to make it works so well as Canvas Black." (Monarch Magazine)

A short time after CB released the EP CB’s violinist decided to leave and Canvas Black continued on as a six-piece band. Straight off the bat they started to work on new material as well as maintaining the strict rehearsal routine.

In May 2014 CB got the opportunity to play in the final of the Wacken Metal Battle Norway, in Trondheim. CB played alongside other great band such as Timewaves, Atena, Capillary, Endolith and VulvAniaX. CB ended up placing third, which was quite nice since this was their first show ever. The following months CB did two shows in Bergen playing support for Screams of Scarlet at Inside Rock Stage and support for Temple Sleep at the legendary Garage in Bergen.

During the summer of 2014, CB received a call from Vredehammer who were looking for support acts for their upcoming Vinteroffer tour. CB gladly accepted the offer and went on spending 10 days traveling through Europe playing nine shows with Violent X, Nox Vorago and headliner Vredehammer. CB and the rest of the Vinteroffer crew and bands traveled through Germany, the Netherlands and Poland from November 13nd to the 22nd. The busy schedule and daily routine of playing did wonders for the Canvas Black sound, stamina and attitude on stage.

In May 2015 CB did a split-gig with Bear Claw Alliance, Steinhest and Kraken at Inside Rock Stage. The rest of 2015 was used shaping the new material and getting ready to record drums at Tinnitus Studios in Bergen for the upcoming album release. After the drums was recorded Canvas did its final concert with Felix as its drummer at Hulen Bergen, January 2016. Canvas parted ways with Felix in May and Canvas Black continued on as a 5-piece band. The rest of 2016 has been spent recording, producing and mixing the debut album set to be released in the spring 2017.

One sentence to describe a band like Canvas Black is: “The punch, the rawness and technical brutality of death metal combined with playfulness, make up the foundation for something not yet heard in the ever expanding world of metal.
