When he was little, he went to Australia with his parents, Ian and Carol Sykes. At the age of 8 he returned to Stockbridge, Sheffield. In 2003, he began recording short songs under the name Quakebeat. He has also played in other bands including hip-hop band "Womb 2 Da Tomb" with fellow Bring Me the Horizon member Matt Nicholls and his brother Tom Sykes and metal band "Purple Curto" as drummer and vocalist with his schoolmate Neil Whiteley, taking the pseudonym "Olisaurus", which he later used for his solo material.
