Quality Post Thrash leaning on the introspective side! A great find for all amateurs of good Metal!

Detorn are a French band and have been active for the last 5 years. They just released The Dark Passenger, their very first full-length after 2009’s EP Locked Inside.

Though you may read they play « Death Thrash » on the band’s page in Spirit of Metal, you may as well forget about it right away. Detorn play a mix of modern Metal that is mostly Post Thrash but also brings other influences, more or less modern: there are some Prog hints reminiscent of Prong or Tool and even some Grunge feel similar to Alice in Chains.

The Dark Passenger’s sound is definitely modern and the quality of the production is rather impressive considering it’s only a self-release. Maybe having Brett Caldas-Lima (Devin Townsend, Kalisia, etc.) to master the tracks is certainly no coincidence for a sound that is really professional and definitely on par with the work of bands that benefit from the financial support of labels.

One can read on their promo sheet that this album will please fans of Pantera, Machine Head and other Alice in Chains. With Julien Nore’s voice, it’s no surprise they may address Alice in Chains’ fans considering his voice is very similar to that of Jerry Cantrell on slower parts. Slower parts which are found throughout the album and counterbalance the controlled brutality of The Dark Passenger, which is first and foremost a Metal album.

Though the Pantera influences have not yet been completed digested, Detorn still play a music that, though it is aggressive most times is nonetheless very personal, almost intellectual. Lyrical themes deal with the darker side of Man and are rather introspective and reminiscent of early Korn or Tool.

Overall, The Dark Passenger is a very good musical experience and a successful one at it. Obviously, Detorn’s primary objective is to get signed by a label to allow them to promote even more their music and considering this release that’s just the worst we could wish for them. Something else one may wish for Detorn is to finally let go off of their past influences which at times are too palpable even though it never brings down their songs. Once the shedding done at last, Detorn have all the elements required to give birth to even more personal pieces and become an independent band per se.
