Suckceed – rather an unknown name so far, but I am sure this will change pretty soon. Their self titled self-produced debut album looks rather old fashioned (the artwork is pure 80ies!) but don’t be put off by appearances.
Inside are about 30 minutes pure
Hard Rock with a Heavy
Metal attitude which - on first hearing – took my breath away with surprise. This quartet from Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria – not exactly the world capital of Rock music – knows its business!
The first song, “LSD”, starts with a slightly Tibetan-sounding intro – the melody crops up again in the last piece – to turn then into a driving rock song. The band hymn “
Suckceed” is fierce, yet melodic, Heavy
Metal with powerful hooks, a song to stay in your head for quite a long time! “
Bitch Mobile” is fast-paced yet with a slightly
Old-School-ish touch. “Seventeen” is a fine melodious rock ballad, yet thankfully without any kitsch, and it reminds me of the PRETTY MAIDS at their best. “Rise up” is easily the hardest, fastest, most driving song on the whole album and the chorus wouldn’t leave my head. “Drop the gun” is the last fast track on the CD starting with the sounds of a helicopter and voices on a radio. “Counting the words” is a beautiful, emotional ballad with a delightful intro and extro on the piano, showing once again what
Suckceed are capable off in the slow track. The last number “Siempre y por todas partes” is a two-and-a-half minute instrumental piece, short but impressive with very nice chords and a slightly Spanish touch.
Front man Franky B. gives the whole album a very authentic air with his rough voice – and I may add that he is live on stage even better!
And Mike’s performance on the guitar need not shy away from international comparison as especially the last track shows. His nimble-fingered and versatile playing on the whole album is a pleasure and a delight.
To put it in a nutshell:
Suckceed don’t invent anything new but with this long player they have given us eight good tracks showing the full extent of their expertise. They are committed to their sound, completely authentic and very accomplished. I can only hope that this debut will bring them the attention they deserve and a chance to perform on some bigger stages.
