A frighteningly good debut that is both brutal and catchy!

Reason is coming back to Brutal Death Metal. During the last five years, everyone observed a foul tendency in the genre: piling up as many notes as possible in the least amount of time. While for a few bands it gave birth to uncanny works of technical terror, most of the followers were putting out one soulless record after another leading to the asphyxiation of the scene.

With revivalist bands of the OSDM sound now coming back in full force, bands and fans alike have certainly and eventually understood that for a label to sign something really "brutal" and "technical", it would take more than "mere" musicianship. Reckless Manslaughter from Germany have certainly understood it better than most since their debut is the perfect mixture of brutality and this Old School groove. In a similar fashion than Sweden’s Torture Division, the Germans have come up with a sound that is not only uber-powerful but it’s got guts, sweat and great songwriting. To sum it up, Reckless Manslaughter play Death Metal, not a doomy raw version of it, not a disarticulated mix of arpeggios and sweeps, but true fucking brutal Death Metal...

For one, when you have someone of Dan Swano’s caliber behind the mixing desk, you know the results are not obviously going to be fantastic but it’s a good indication where the band is aiming at quality-wise. Probably the good ole Swede (behind too many projects for me to even start mentioning) found the same aforementioned quality in the Germans than I did. And the results are so good that most likely, in the end, Swano couldn’t help himself and made his very own guest appearance on the insanely mid-tempo neck-grinder title aptly named Devastating Domination.

Groove wise, the double death metal / hardcore vocals and sometimes a few more or less obvious crusty musical incursions guarantee for some great riffing that will have your feet, head and just about everything else in your body moving along the furious pounding of "Pneumator"'s drums (one of the many highlights of this great debut). Citing the drummer, I could cite everyone else in the band: I loved the versatility of the singer (grunts, pig squeals, hardcore), the brutal OSDM feel of the guitar riffing as well as the catchier-than-catchy bass play. I've mentioned Torture Division for the sake of analogy and could have also talked about their similarities with Vicious Art except that Reckless Manslaughter sound a bit less modern than the Swedes which, I know, for most of the DM aficionados will be an appreciated plus.

Storm of Vengeance is yet only a self-released debut but if no one ends up signing this band to distribute it the way it should be, then something’s rotten out there. While we're still looking for 2011's best Death Metal record because of the many (and sometimes huge) disappointments, it may very well be right before our eyes but only need to be signed/distributed to turn the world over in flames. A frighteningly good debut that is both brutal and catchy? What the fuck are we waiting for?
