This German band has excited me. Maybe I could expect it, because these musicians are not new to the metal scene, although the
Despise & Conquer’s history is short: just in May 2008 producer/keyboardist Sascha Risseler (
Eternal Dirge,
Ninnghizhidda,
Stormgarde) has established the band. In its line-up we can see musicians from
Paranoiz,
Citizen Kain,
Stormgarde, Treasury and other bands. Such projects are always extremely interesting, because you never know what to expect, what these musicians will create.
And on the other hand, you can be sure that the result will be definitely good.
Despise & Conquer is a mix of death, thrash and sometimes black and industrial metal (I would say thrash metal dominates). There are 3 songs on the “Promo 2009”, and when the music ends, all that you can say is “why is it over so fast?!” It’s so intense, emotional, atmospheric and metal down-the-line that it won’t leave you player for long time. Production is really good, and every second you can hear that these guys know what to play and how to play. Every song is a kind of metal anthem – it’s catchy, rhythmic, driving, groove, you can bang your head to the death (or you could – if promo would be longer). The sound is solid, thick and massive (thanks to producing work of Sascha Risseler and mastering by Dan Swano). Vocal is harsh and belongs more to the thrash metal style, or stand on the border of thrash and death. Guitar solos are clear and add more melody along with keyboards. All the songs have good structure which can be named classic, with intros, verses, choruses, solos, breaks, but everything is done on such level and with such quality that you can’t say that it’s boring or you have already heard it all. Some slow breaks in between of rush of massive drumming with guitar riffs make it even more dynamic and active.
What makes this music special is a mix of all these features plus keyboards. Keyboards bring black metal feeling with orchestral arrangements and organ like in the “Casting
Skin” and sometimes industrial metal lines with electronic sounds like in the “
Resistance is Futile”. Keyboards soften the intensity of the music and make it more listenable for everybody, not only for the fans of brutal music. Keyboards make this music also atmospheric and even epic, I’d say.
Obviously this band will surprise us in the future, and I hope they will do it in a positive way. So far the “Promo 2009” is worth listening it and characterizes
Despise & Conquer as a modern metal band who knows how to play metal.
