Writing Aranea’s review… Hmmm… Alright, check.

I guess that among the many chores of everyday life, some are more welcome than others. I’ve also been putting Aranea’s review away for far too long and I thought this morning, let’s do it and be over with it.

I’ve read once in a review that some albums you can only listen to once or twice before the urge of sending it down to the trash bin becomes an irrepressible force. Well, I tried. Twice. After that, I thought this required a third listen just to make sure. But no, I won't play it a third time because I don't have the slightest hint of motivation to do so. I was bored after one play and even more after the second and it turns out I have a few hundred records that are way much more worth my time.

Aranea is a young band from Ohio in the US. If you take a closer look at their myspace page, you’ll see that they’re labeled Death Metal / Hardcore. Well, to shorten things up a bit and to be more accurate, just write Deathcore, and you'll get a pretty fair musical representation of where Aranea stands.

Formed in April 2008, they didn’t take quite the time to make things right. Usually Death Metal bands release demos, EPs and the likes before going full-length, but the guys at Aranea couldn’t wait to hone their skills and just recorded a full debut album that is yet to be released on a proper (or not) label. And this shows.

Each track is a copy of the former one, and nothing really stands out except a debauchery of technique (well you have to give them credit for that), fast riffing and multiple time signatures. Too much is too much, and you soon find yourself completely surrounded and choked by what I believe was meant to be a demonstration of their technical skills. Except, that playing instruments and writing songs are two different jobs and while they're certainly great musicians, they still have a long way to produce anything catchy.

Should you still be interested nonetheless, you might want to think of Aranea in terms of Cephalic Carnage at their worst. It probably is a good thing that they’re not signed yet (though everything is possible nowadays) because the guys must seriously improve songwriting. For now, it’s just a writhing form of Deathc(h)ore that fails to catch the attention of the listener. It’s probably great to see them play live but the interest soon falls short when listened to on record.

If you still think these guys may be good and that I am too full of shit or just the wrong guy to write that review, give their myspace page a chance and contact them!
