Born from the ashes of the fantastic Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam celebrates this year its 17-year carrier. I still remember the release of “Ten”, their first album, in these times seeing the birth of the “Grunge” style in Seattle… Nowadays, Pearl Jam is considered a leader of the genre and is idolized by millions of fans worldwide. Three years after “Live at the Garden”, the combo is finally back on our screens: let’s see how our friends are going on.

The first observation I will make is that there is no surprise with the line-up: the 5 usual ones, close as ever (Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron), plus Kenth “Boom” Gasper for the keyboards.

« Immagine in cornice » redraws the Italian tour the band carried out in September 2006. That tour visited 5 towns: Bologne, Verone, Milan, Turin and Pistoia. So, it is not a unique, complete concert, but a compilation of songs performed during the different shows. Each title is separated from the following one by a short sequence filmed off-stage, revealing some pieces of the life of the musicians while being on the road.

Their Italian epopee is so summarized by 13 pieces mostly coming from 4 albums: “Pearl Jam” (2006), “Vitology” (1994), “Versus” (1993) and “Ten” (1992).

The stage looks like a true battlefield where Pearl Jam is leading a fight. The band is in excellent shape and it offers us a performance worthy of the name. The band itself is amazing: despite their enormous success, the musicians remain simple men: no rock-star whim, no fashion parade with a new suit for each title… nothing of that. The show is traditional: the spectacle relies solely on the shoulder of the music and the grimaces of the performers. Their complicity is still present; the comrades seem very close one from the other as shown by the fact they play as a team on-stage and not isolated, each one on a side of the stage. Musically speaking, the work is huge. The titles really take new dimensions played live. The sound itself is also simple, without complication, only with some punctual effects. The overall impression is of sincere rock which carries us within different ambiances, quite well rhythmic in general. Despite not being frankly a big fan of their style, I must recognize I’ve been bluffed by all the titles and by the palpable resulting energy. Whatever the weather is (an insane rain in Verone), the town, the hall size, the combo gives everything it has in its stomach while the public keeps asking for more. Concerning the interpretation, Pearl Jam doesn’t limit itself into playing the same songs over and over. Instead, they feel each time the ambiance, break its habits in consequence and init amazing improvisations (“Porch”, “Alive” …) to end up on its feet back to the original theme. If the titles are mature and well-done, the musicians are too. Each time, the public gets catch up in the game and ends up being louder than the band (“Porch”, “Better man”…). This DVD contains several great sequences but the most terrific one is probably “Alive”, where the band starts a new improvisation and the public sings louder than Eddie, letting him world-less during his performance. It must be something huge hearing thousands of people shouting your very own song.

It’s clear that the front man is still the uncontested leader of the band. How could one not be impressed by his charisma, his professionalism, his skills and his work? Thanks to his honesty, his respect for people and a few tricks, he keeps subduing the public. Do you want an example of all the tasks he’s completing everyday to achieve his aims? Before each show, he prepares with a (cute) translator, his speeches in Italian which will introduce each title. He does so in the sole purpose of installing a link, a connection with the public. And this would be impossible to do if he was speaking in a language different from the one of the people in the hall. Another surprising trick: the set is never freeze nor prepared in advance. Eddie is the only real barometer, and depending on the ambiance, he defines the set with the band a few minutes before the show, but not completely: recalls are only defined at the last moment, just before going back on-stage, depending on how the public reacted during the show. How could one be more efficient than that?

To summarize these concerts I would say it is an excellent job from the musicians and a complete pleasure for the spectator.

The off-stage parts bring a tiny intimist look at the personality and the life of each member while on tour. Here are some examples: one meets Eddie’s little family, his ideas on problems and on wars around the world; Mike tells us the story of his tattoos; Jeff explains how his passion of skating helps him decompressing; Boom tries a superb church organ and is caught by the moment; so, a set of surprising and unexpected moments which fans will appreciate for sure. Let me end with a really important remark: apart from the songs, everything is subtitled in French.

The conclusion is simple: 17 years after, the band is still in good shape and is not overcome by success. The musicians, humble and respectful for the public as they always have been, are excellent, the little flame of passion still there in their actions. It’s clean, powerful and full of surprises. It is indeed a great moment of a great band for a great public. Hats off! Keep on with the good job, guys!

BONUS:

Section far from being essential as it contains only 3 other titles:

· A quick one while he's away (Eddie singing with My morning jacket) (Turin);
· Throw your arms around me (Pistoia);
· Yellow leadbetter (Milan).

VIDEO QUALITY:

Nice contrast, nice bright and very profound colours, that’s a chance for a concert filmed supposedly in high definition. Unfortunately, one gets compression problems as ofTen. They are particularly recurrent around the drums. But that problem is negligible in front of the overall quality.

SOUND QUALITY:

A killing… the sound is really huge!

The 5.1 version is excellent. The channel repartition wreaks havoc: a guitarist on each side, Jeff perfectly in the bass speaker, Eddie on the 3 frontal speakers while Matt and Boom share mostly the two frontal stereo speakers. The back ones contribute, with the others, to the accurate retranscription of the halls echoes and of the acclamations of all the public standing behind us!

For those of you not having yet their lounge full of speakers, no worries! The stereo version will please you straight from the first note.
