A ravaging mini release!!!

I came across this little Ravage EP titled Freedom Fighter when I was going through some of the new and upcoming releases. In all honestly I wasn’t really looking forward to giving it a patient listen. Despite the initial reluctance I still decided to go ahead and hear it as I had nothing to lose. When the tracklist finished in its entirety, here’s what I concluded. Holy mothers of metal!!!!!! Where the hell did this come from? Talk about heavy metal in its most savage form, this must be the very epitome. Ravage should have become a household name in Boston by now. They easily rival Kiuas from Finland when it comes to pure unadulterated heavy ear splitting power metal.

So what makes this EP that special? Let me first highlight the amount of work put in. It’s got insanely catchy riffs right from start to finish with over the top drum work and a vocalist who I might say is one crazy guy with an unimaginable range. The production work is slick and thus showcases the talent of every single band member. I was told these guys draw major inspiration from Grave Digger and Iron Maiden, but I think they go way ahead by not sounding like either one of those veterans.

Six tracks of pure fury blaze through the length of this mini release. The opener “Freedom Fighter” starts off with a brilliant drum solo after which a heavy riff comes in to kick start the song. The follow up “Damn Nation” kicks off with a surprising acoustic guitar intro but ultimately speeds up with a thrash riff and goes on real well. Up next is the fastest and the most insane track on this EP called “The Shredder” with the drummer even playing black metal like blast beats in the mid section along with the leads. The chorus simply rules on this. The musicianship on this beats the hell out of the wankery Dragonforce and several of those flower metallers follow.

The next two tracks “Grapes Of Wrath” and “A Captive Of Sin” continue the rampage with enough ideas to keep you holding on to dear life. The finisher is the biggest surprise around. How often have you come across a band covering “Be Quick Or Be Dead” originally composed by the monsters of metal Iron Maiden them self? Ravage does pure justice to the track by adding a touch of their own. Even the masters would be proud of it. The riff work is heavy and the vocal work godly.

Therefore folks, if you’re wandering around looking for something that gives you a refreshing change from the same old conventional sound, then look no further. Go for this one and bang your head till it drops off. Dragonforce, you kids have a lot to learn. Why don’t you guys give this a hear too?
