...very calming, soothing, and relaxing., with a subtle ambiance of synthesizer music...

Srodek is a Black Metal solo project for Jon Backlund, also known as Nekrofukker. He's no stranger to the Swedish Black Metal scene, as he is also a member of other bands in that region, like; Eldrit, Dod, and Oferd. He was utilized chiefly as the vocalist for those bands and has been exploring his own dark horizons of musicianship with Srodek, since 2007. He released his first album, En Halsning Till Doden, in 2008. Now 3 years later, he's released this sophomore album, entitled Forfall. It consists of 7 tracks for a duration of about 37 minutes.

The album opens with an eerie intro, which blends the synthesizer and flute music, with the ghostly bellowing of a distorted female voice. This sounds uncannily similar to the first part of a soundtrack for a TV documentary, of the Yosemite killer. The entire album plays at a slow tempo, with a mix of acoustic guitars and electric guitars with a slightly serrated edge of distortion. The beat is more like early 1970's easy listening music along the lines of James Taylor. It is very calming, soothing, and relaxing, with a subtle ambiance of synthesizer music in the background. But background music is really what this music sounds like. The music sounds nice, but the only quality that comes close to differentiating the sound as metal is the slight distortion of the electric guitar.

How the the hell can music that sounds as tame as that be transformed into Black Metal? By the dark and grim vocals of the experienced veteran, Nekrofukker. He usually starts each song with an angry routine, as if the world has gypped him out of what was rightfully his. Then he invariably moves into the sad and hurt angle. To give an overall effect of someone who is trying to rationalize something wrong. Like a hermit who is going through a box of souvenirs that he stole from the people that he had murdered through the years.

So am I willing to jump onto this bandwagon of self pity? Only if the price is right, like $4, and I'd probably only listen to it twice. Although I already listened to this album a dozen times, to familiarize myself with it. This is some of the lightest music that Backlund been involved with. Dod is much heavier and faster, like black thrash. Eldrit is faster and uglier, like classic Burzum.
