Next time you visit Denver, be sure to catch all the historical attractions ... the breweries,
Buffalo Bill's grave and
Drug Under. This extreme export of the Mile High City has released what might be the next evolutionary step in heavy Rock with their self-titled debut album.
I've been a fan of
Drug Under for some time now, but I've only heard a few of their songs ... so when I found out about this release, I snapped it up with the quickness and these guys didn't disappoint me. What a great album ! The first track, "
Never Again," is a killer primer for the rest of the CD. Before the vocals even kicked in I was groovin' in a big way ... and stayed in that mode until the end of the last track, "It's Over." Bummer !
These guys have an extremely polished sound. Everything works well together ... from the percussion to the guitars to the vocals, which add a lot of power to the already potent mix of tempo and melody.
And, talk about hooks ! It was nearly impossible for me NOT to get totally into the rhythm ... head-bobbin' and toe-tappin' till I needed a beer to cool off.
If I had one criticism for
Drug Under, it would be re-recording "Translucent." This is the tune that turned me on to the band and was re-recorded for this CD, but I personally thought the original had more power in the vocals and guitars. Nevertheless, it's still a bad-ass tune and one of my all-time favs.
I'd say
Drug Under is poised for the mainstream. They're a radio-ready, professional band with a perfect balance of attractive vocals, driving beats and monster grooves. If you only buy one CD this year ... get this one.
