Ridiculous but decent

Depressive Black Metal is my favourite genre of music there's no denying that, I love the dark claustrophobic atmosphere that brings up images of urban decay and fields of rotting corpses but I'm not blind to the blatant ridiculousness of some of it. It seems like the new trend in Depressive Black Metal is to be as ridiculous as possible whether that's by having ridiculous album art and promo pictures (Lifelover- Pulver), fulfilling all major stereotypes of the genre (Forgive Me), trying to be as controversial as possible (Shining), petty emotional whining (Happy Days), vocals reminiscent of your grandmother blowing up (Silencer), wrecking a classic album (Bethlehem) or by pretending to be a woman (Be Persecuted) it's all getting more ridiculous by the minute. Drown In Solitude a band from Brazil have reached new heights in ridiculousness; by sounding like an elephant. Yes the whole album sounds like a pack of elephants was let into the recording studio and just left to do whatever it is elephants do. Even though I am unable to take this seriously due to the ridiculous albeit very unorthodox vocals it is surprisingly quite an enjoyable little release.

First onto the instrumentation, there's nothing new or ground breaking present here but it is performed well. The synthesizers try their best to create a mournful and melancholic atmosphere and to be honest they do a pretty damn good job of it, they may not be as good as those of Nae'blis or Gris but for what they are they're good and add a much needed touch of melancholy to the album. The drums are no doubt programmed but do a good job of keeping the beat, no complaints here. The guitars are the standard norm of the genre, there's very little variation on present here and they're suitable distorted. There are some bits especially in Cold Sense of Suffering that are suprisingly melodic and well written, even beautiful but it's really hard to notice the instrumentation when it's being drowned out by what is no doubt the albums most notable aspect; the vocals.

Yes as I mentioned before the vocals are very reminiscent of an elephant; frighteningly so. However the vocals aren't actually that bad, I get what the artist is trying to do here; to sound as unorthodox and tortured as possible and to be honest he succeeded in it. The vocals are certainly some of the most interesting I've heard in a while and will of course be the albums biggest selling point. Unfortunately though the vocals kind of detract from the atmosphere simply for the fact they're not depressing at all, unlike the best vocalists of the style like Kim Carlsson this guy simply just doesn't conjure up a convincing emotional performance. Yes the vocals are completely demented and admittedly well performed I just don't feel anything whilst they're on, unlike the previously mentioned Kim Carlsson who actually manages to convey feelings of despondency and depression within the context of the music, this guy can't simply because he sounds like an elephant, I can't help but laugh a little whilst they're on. Oh and the lyrics must be a product of google translate for example "did your pain and suffering worth for something ?", seriously? It should be was your pain and suffering worth something, not that, that barely makes sense!

All in all, it's not that bad it's just not that great either. The vocals are certainly some of the more unique in the field but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a good thing. The music is decent, enjoyable even but with the animalistic howling going on over it it's nion impossible to take it seriously. If you're interested in hearing the vocals then you should check it out but the rest of us don't need to bother.
Final score- 10/20
Pros- Synthesizers, unique vocals, some of the melodies are good.
Cons- Lack of emotional depth and vision, I don't feel like the musicians heart was in this when he recorded it.

Crinn - 09 Декабрь 2012: I've had this album for awhile..yeah, I agree with this, it can be a bit ridiculous..probably why I'm not the biggest fan of this album, it just hasn't grown on me in the way that others have unfortunately.

Satanicarchangel - 09 Декабрь 2012: I think that if the vocals were slightly altered it might grow on me a bit more, but as it stands I just can't take it seriously.
