Born of Hades is a rather young band that released one demo album in 2009. The band consists of former member of Florida’s Generichrist. They play a rather intriguing mixture of Thrash Metal and Death Metal that uses both guttural growls and more Black Metal’ish backing vocals.

After some intro that definitely got me scared at first using some electronic “techno” sounds over acoustic background, I felt scared from the start. Thrash, Death, Black, Doom and now techno. Sometimes you have to keep things simple to keep them entertaining and mixing too many “foreign” elements just sounds bad.

Thank goodness, that musical diversion did not last, and the next full-fledged tracks are indeed Thrash Death songs. Thrash metal very much for the riffing and Death Metal for the overall feeling and obviously the main vocals.

The first few notes reminded of bands like Cianide or Autopsy. So expect Death Metal that is heavy as hell with parts that plunge into down-tempo mayhem but yet manage thrashy riffing on the more up-tempo parts. The guttural vocals and this feeling of heaviness also made me thought of Bolt Thrower.

With such references in mind, you may think of Born of Hades as something definitely not to miss. Still, as much as I enjoy that kind of music, I find most of the stuff I listened to on this demo is rather generic and not that greatly performed. In many aspects, the overall feel is amateurish and the songs could benefit from better improved musicianship. I may even add that I found the drummer to be the main cause of this feeling as if he were playing totally different songs than the rest of the guys in the studio and exaggerating too much on the use of hi-hats and crash cymbals. What I mean is if you're going to play Atheist-like drums, it has to fit in somehow with the music and those heavy doom death parts don't really associate that well with that “elfish” light drumming.

This is only a demo, so there’s still room for improvement. I won’t be a sad douchebag and totally diss the work of these guys because there are some great moments in Born of Hades but even if you’re going to be another Autopsy-cover band, you may as well do it right from the start. Lack of identity is never wrong in my eyes when the music pays tribute to the great old ones but here I find myself longing for better musicianship and/or production so I can really immerse within the music.
