Once in a while you hear an album that stops you in your tracks and keeps your full attention from start to finish. For me,
Hypnogaja accomplished this feat with
Below Sunset. Quite possibly one of the most diversely written rock albums I've heard from an indie band in some time,
Below Sunset is a big adventure in melody and groove.
This record starts out with a simple yet commanding bass line. Then "They Don't Care" smacks you down with the reality of the music biz and how we're all just part of the money machine that is big music. Most notable are
Jason "ShyBoy" Arnold's mighty pipes. Authoritative and right on target, he obviously didn't earn the nickname for his singing ability !
Of course, the rest of
Hypnogaja are no slouches either. While they don't go for incredibly technical compositions, they do radiate a high degree of power in every song. From the dark melancholy of "
Nothing Left To Give" and the eerily Beatle-esque "
Looking Glass" to their most excellent rendition of The Eurythmics' "Here Comes The
Rain Again," these guys have a little something to offer every kind of rocker.
Overall, I found
Below Sunset to be a great listen. While you might hear influences in the vein of
Staind,
System Of A Down,
Linkin Park or
Tool,
Hypnogaja delivers it their way ... with groovy hooks and a modern rock style all their own.
